Polar bear

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The Polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is the largest predator, an adult male can weight up to 1500 pounds. The females are much smaller, weiging in at around 350 to 500 pounds.
This shot is taken with a video camera from a specially built vehicle that is safe for observing these magnificent animals in the wild. The temperature was -16C with a very strong wind and blowing snow- and I had trouble with my film camera- the film broke, so the video camera sort of saved the day!.
Churchill is a small town on the Hudson's Bay, it was founded in 1717 for fur trading. It now calls itself the 'Polar Bear Capital of the World'. Every fall several thousand Polar bears gather in the vicinty to wait for the bay to freeze up. They then go out onto the ice to hunt for seals.
With global warming there is now a major concern: the ice does not freeze until very late in fall and the bears are starving. |

Excellent capture of the polar bear Marialuisa. Just as well you're in a specially built vehicle, these animals do get very unhappy when hungry! And you were lucky you had your video camera with you.
Great composition, it's a good posting. Well shown, thank you.
Hi Marialuisa,
Excellent! This is on my dream list to go on one of these trips. I want to be the guy they put in the cage outside on the ground! I love this shot.

I Like this shot, probably also because it shows a wild animal I do not have a hope of ever seeing in the wild - here in hot Africa I live with lions etcetera. The pale background in your picture does tell us something about the conditions too.

Hi Marialuisa,
I spent a couple of summers working in Alaska, 1980 and 1981. Shame on me cause I didn't take any pictures. But, I did count 10 Alaskan Brown Bears near Nome, Alaska in one afternoon. I never did get to see any polar bears. :( My understanding is that they are the only mammal that will stalk a man for food. Anything that moves is fair game for this big boy. It's a shame your still camera broke, but nice capture with the video!
Thanks for sharing,
Dave
