[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Continuing with the new years babies this is a calf of american Bison (Bison bison), The picture was taken inside Riding Mountain National Park, the park is an "island" surrounded by farmland, therefore to prevent damage to property all the bison are contained inside a 500 hectare fenced enclousure.

Due to reckless hunting and habitat destruction Bison was extirpated from this region, and was reintroduced in the early 1900īs. This story repeats all across North America. As in 1700īs Huge Bison herds of several millons roamed freely in the big plains of Canada and the States. By the 1900īs the species was on the brink of extinction. Todays surviving populations are protected and secluded to national parks, not in a completly wild state.

one can only wonder how amazing sight a herd of millions must have been. Still an impressive animal to observe and photograph and I am certanly glad they still around and growing in numbers.

Happy 2009!!

Simon

Hello Simon,
First of all, I wish you a Happy New Year 2009!
Thanks for your kind words on my recent picture.
When I had the first glance at your picture, I thought you had put up the picture of a domestic calf. It is only after reading your note that I came to know it was a baby Bison.
The calf looks so cute and innocent in your picture.
Well done and TFS.

Well done, Simon.
Beautiful calf of the American bison. I especially do like the light.
Great focus and depth of field as well.
