[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Please note: This posting is to correct a mistake I made on yesterday's notes & title.
***** BLUE MORPHO *****
Morpho menelaus.
I saw these, neotropical butterflies, ... in abundance, ... in " meu QUERIDO Brasil" = my BELOVED Brazil.
The females are not as brilliantly coloured, having a brown edge with white spots surrounding the irridescent blue wings.
The Morphos are some of the most dazzeling. The underside appear brown with a series of "eye" spots to frighten off predators. The irridescent blue top has a dual purpose; to attract mates; and, also to startle enemies that come too close for comfort. Its
habit of closing the wings at rest makes this creature one of the hardest to register. ( I was VERY,VERY lucky !!!)
Shall post its " brown" side another time. Also, other species of the B.M. in days to come will be posted.
They feed exclusively on "fermenting" fruit to drink the alcohol, using their straw-like proboscis.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE IRRIDESCENT BLUE IS ALSO TO STARTLE ENEMIES THAT COME TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT ...

The W/S has an "OWL EYE" with wings closed. They Blue Morpho looks almost similar.

Hallo Aires,
... that's it. This Morpho looks attractive with the wings widely opened that is usually not the case. On many Morpho pictures in TrekNature you can only - and this is also impressive - admire the underside wing pattern.

The colours are wonderful. This looks like a large butterfly, a lucky capture since butterflies can fly away at any time. Your notes are informative too. Keep up the good work.
