This is another one of those purple star fish laying around Saltery Bay, just south of Powell River.
Their scientific category is ECHINODERM, which means spiny skin.
They have no bones, only a hydraulic skeleton. I believe that white spot in the centre is the water intake for that mechanism. The starfish moves by pumping water into tubes that run along its legs (arms?). As the pressure in one tube builds, the arm will flex or extend.
Starfish enjoy fine shellfish, which they pry open using their strong arms. Once the shell is opened, the echinoderm pushes its stomach inside where it releases digestive juices and absorbs the protein for itself.

Nice picture of this colorful animal. Good notes. Do you take underwater pictures as well? I have wanting to get hold of some equipment for tropical coral reef diving pictures and looking for some ideas on what to get (not to expensive, but good quality). Would appreciate insights if you can offer some.
