purple starfish

Plenty of big purple starfish around Vancouver Island. Don't know why the colour purple is so popular amongst these invertebrates - is it the product of a chromium compound? or does it make them less visible in deeper water? Anyone help me out with this?
That white dot near the center is probably a water intake for the beast's hydraulic-type motor. They move by pumping water into various tubes, which then expand and make the legs (or arms?) move as needed. |

Hallo John
I am currently running a tight schedule and do not have time for a proper critique, but my oh my this purple starfish just stole my heart. The colour and texture captured is very pleasing to the eye and is an absolute feast to look at. It looks as if can be soft, like a stuffed toy or pillow. Thanks for sharing and although words are few, appreciation is plenty. Best regards.
