Queen Charlotte Islands
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
The Queen Charlotte Islands or Haida Gwaii ("Land of the Haida") are an archipelago off the northwest coast of British Columbia, Canada, consisting of two main islands, Graham Island in the North, and Moresby Island in the south, and approximately 150 smaller islands with a total landmass of 10,180 km˛. The islands are separated from the British Columbia mainland to the east by the Hecate Strait. Vancouver Island lies to the south, across Queen Charlotte Sound, while the U.S. state of Alaska is to the north, across the Dixon Entrance.
The islands preserve large stands of old-growth rainforest (enormous towering trees which are thousands of years old) and native vegetation, which are found only on a few other distant shores (Japan and Ireland), indicating to geologists a possible land bridge connected the islands to them at some point in time. The density of certain native plants are also evidence that ‘Gwaii Hanna’ escaped glaciation, which had occurred over 10,000 years ago, altering land and vegetation in other regions of what are parts of Alaska and Canada today.

There is wonderful light shimmering on this special stretch of water. Did you actually go out to the islands or were you heading north? We spent a lot of vacations boating in the waters between Vancouver Island and the mainland but we never went out the the Queen Charlottes and I often wish we had. Thanks for sharing a really nice image.

Hello Christian;
great seascape, the lighting and those different textures look so great. Very well composed, the division of the different layers is excellent.
