This female Canvasback Duck was captured at Kin Coulee Park in Medicine Hat. I think these duck have a noble look about them, but the main reason for this posting is what I think is a nice reflection of the bird and reeds, maybe some of you will think it to busy, your thoughts please.

Canvasback
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Aves

Order: Anseriformes

Family: Anatidae

Genus: Aythya

Species: A. valisineria

The Canvasback (Aythya valisineria) is a large diving duck, 48-60 cm long and weighing 1270 g.

The adult male has a black bill, a red head and neck, a black breast, red eyes and a whitish body. The adult female has a brown head and body and a black bill.

Their breeding habitat is North American prairie wetlands. The bulky nest is built from vegetation in a marsh and lined with down. Loss of nesting habitat has caused populations to decline. Canvasbacks usually take new mates each year, pairing in late winter.

Canvasbacks are strongly migratory and overwinter on the coasts of the United States, the Great Lakes and British Columbia in saltwater bays, estuaries or lakes. This species is a very rare vagrant to western Europe.

Canvasbacks feed mainly by diving, sometimes dabbling, mostly eating aquatic plants with some molluscs, aquatic insects and small fish. Wild celery, Valisneria americana, is a favourite food and is the origin of this bird's species name.

The canvasback sometimes lays eggs in other canvasback nests.

Hi Rick,

I love this duck! The brown on browns turned out wonderfully. And the duck is so sharp we see it all. The face and beak are beautiful - even a sparkle in his eye. Magnificent refelction. A beautiful photo.

Beautiful!
Hello Rick, this is a very good picture, explendid image of this Canvasback, the collors and details are fantastic, indeed a very good capture, well done my friend..

I like the effects here, Rick.
The bird looks beautiful with its head turned to the left.
Despite the ripples looking quite strong, the reflection of the bird is quite sharp.
Well done and TFS.

Hi Rick,

This is better. A nice safe duck instead of a snake! She is lovely and noble. I agree that the reflections are wonderful. Her color certainly camouflages her in that setting. Just for fun I tried a workshop to see if I could isolate her a bit just for the sake of wanting a more defined focal point. The natural color and sharpness is lovely.

Hello Rick,
This duck really camouflage itself with its environment but I think that this picture worth to be published as it is not an unusual specie and I think that this reflection is great! The WS helped to bring out more details on the bird. This is an interesting post! Thank you :-)
Claudine
