Hello, two days ago my daughter, her boyfriend and I went on a 30 mile bike ride from Lake Ontario to Niagara Falls and back again. Where were you sky? :o) On the way up to the falls we stopped at the Butterfly Conservatory. I think we stayed for 2 hours. What a fun place. I had been before but not with my new camera and oh did I have fun snapping shots of these beauties! I have a butterfly pocket guide here at home and I thought..oh no problem I'll find the names of all the butterflies when I get home. But alas I can't find this one in the book. Hope I have better luck with the rest I'm going to show me. But I'm also figuring at least a few of you will be able to identify this butterfly for me.? :o)

Thanks for visting my gallery and your comment on my photos.

Have a GREAT day!
Donna:o)

Hello Donna,
your picture shows a butterfly of the genus Heliconius. Two species are possible, which can be clearly distinguished by the colour pattern of the wings' underside only (not seen here):
- Heliconius melpomene
- Heliconius erato
family: Nymphalidae / subfamily: Heliconiinae
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Donna,
the Butterfly Conservatory is fun usually make it there in the winter at least once.
This shot looks wonderful, those once are hard to catch as they are not sitting still for very long. You did an excellent job on the composition, love the OOF BG it shows of the main subject so very well.
Nice close up work, sharpnes, details and colors are wonderful.
Looking forward to some more butterfly shots.

Hi Donna.
I like your tender picture so much despite the small size of the beautiful butterfly. Main subject is detailed, coloured and sharpened perfectly. BG is colourful and very nice too. That is why I say: well done and my compliments.
Alexei.

Beautiful exemplary of Heliconius erato!
Excellent colors and contrast.
Clean and pleasant visual.
