Origin: Thailand. Cut: one of the largest butterflies of the world, up to 25 cm of scale. Manners: This large butterfly of the family of Sphingidae is night. Once hatched, the adults lives from 5 to 7 days and do not feed. They live in fact only time to reproduce. It is thus imperative to begin the breeding with caterpillars or cocoons from the same age. The caterpillars, once hatched, délectent feeder plant on which the eggs were laid. One can distribute willow, lilac, poplar, birch, ailanthe, privet... The growth of the larvae is fast. Once that it is rather large, the caterpillar is metamorphosed. It weaves a silk cocoon in which it is locked up to finish its growth. The blossoming intervenes after a more or less long time according to the temperature and the hygroscopy. With the approach of the winter, it can be necessary to place these cocoons in diapause, so as not to be tributary of a shortage of feeder plants. The sexes are easily discernible and this, even when the butterflies are still in their cocoons. The males have the antennas much thicker than the females.

I hope you will like it !

Great shot, Josee! The colors and patterns on this gigantic butterfly are gorgeous. Sharp detail. Good exposure. Cropped a little tight. Thanks for a stunning picture.

Belle présentation avec de belles couleurs.

Félicitation pour l'envoi et la note très instructive.

Very nice shot Josee.
Never seen this before, it look big if you compare with the other butterfly in the bottom.
Very nice colours, details and composition.
Well done.

Love the chromatism and spectre of this image, also I have never seen this insect before and likely wouldve stayed that way without you. A fat shot !

Spectacular moth and you've captured it very well.

Very good shot!
You've captured this beautiful butterfly well. It look as if it was drawing not photo.
I have feeling that it is a bit oversharpened and maybe croped too tight, but I like it very much.
Well done!

Je les ai vu au Jardin Botanique. Il s sont vraiment impressionnants.
Merci Josée.

Two for the price of one! I cannot believe they grow to 25cms, that is huge.
Just amazing detail, the markings look like they've been drawn with pastels or chalk, fantastic.
An amazing capture, well done.

YES! I do do like it Josee, this butterfly looks absolutely amazing! The colours and markings are most unusual and it looks massive compared to the other butterfly. Very good detail, composition maybe a little tight but what an excellent capture, very well done.

What a beauty! That these can get so large is amazing. This is a perfect specimen. Wonderful composition with good note. Thank you.

A very beautiful shot. Lovely colours and a complementing frame. I also think the crop is a little too tight.
