Western Plains Cottonwood
Populus deltoides)
Hi everyone!
I was on a canoe trip last week down the South Saskatchewan River in SE Alberta. From the canoe I captured this old dead Cottonwood Tree on the bank of the River. I thought the old silver wood and long branches made for a interesting image. It looks much better alive and covered with leaves and birds singing.
There are three species of Cottonwood Trees, this one is the Western Plains Cottonwood and can grow up to 100 feet but normally around 75 feet. The Cottonwood is threaten along the river valleys from cattle, beaver and lack of flooding. Flooding is necessary for the Cottonwood to spread their seeds. We were happy to see that there were several areas that the Cottonwood were starting to grow. I'm guess the flooding that occurred in 2005 helped to spread their seeds around.

Hello Janice,
What a Halloween picture you have caught. This tree would be a great shot also when the sun is retreating from the horizon. Thje topo appears to be in the desert during springtime if it were taken in Eastern Oregon, about 3500 feet. I see sage on the fround if I am correct.
Good catch from the canoe,
Steve
Happy CANADA Day Janice!

Hello Janice,
Very nice composition of this woodpecker condominium, lovely colors with the red cliff, silver tree, sage and green grasses. Thanks for sharing Janice.
