One day in June I was outback mowing my lawn when a killdeer starting hopping around me like they do and I figured something was up...so when I turned off my lawn mower and backed up , she went to our firepit which my husband has been wanting to fill in and she sat down so at that point I knew she had a nest there. Amazing that our 3 dogs and 2 cats totally didn't know she was there or she is just darn good at her act to get them to avoid the nest. I got this photo a week later as she was in the field behind our house , she finally started to trust me and didn't panic when I got close. I was in Mrytle Beach and missed the hatchlings though...:o(

It's interesting to see how she selects a nesting place with and environment where her eggs will blend in. Interesting post and note. Now I know what the killdeer eggs look like.

Hello Donna,
Nice capture!
Pity you were not around to follow up, but then nature could have it's way pecefully without dogs & cats...
Well framed, good natural colours and fine details!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Very nice CG...at least your birds eggs made it so far and by looks they are a bit more camouflaged than mine were. A gull scavenged mine. Very good shot and nice for your journals.

I love the title... baby killdeer and it is eggs... I like the composistion and the color and detail are good. It's a nice peek at the more intimate side of a killdeer's life. Poor little eggs sitting on that gravel.

Hi Donna,
interesting shot, finding those eggs in the fire pit must have been quite exiting. Nice capture, difficult lighting but you captured a lot of great detail.

Hi Donna

How lovely to have such a trusting neighbour. It is a shame you missed her hatchlings. Nice image of the nest and a lovely note to go with it
