[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
To some these delicate flowers look like tiny jewels dangling from the plant and hence the common name “Jewelweed.”

To the hummingbirds on whom they depend for pollination, they must look like little drinking horns suspended from long hooks.

To hikers who have blundered into a patch of poison ivy, they look like beacons of hope, for they offer respite from the itchy agonies soon to come. A temporary field remedy suggested in “A Natural Remedy for Poison Ivy” is to swab the juice found in the stem of jewelweed on to the affected area, because it is a known anti-inflammatory and suspected to have urushiol-blocking compounds. Smart hikers will carry some jewelweed home with them for further treatments.

In the fall, these flowers become a source of fun for the child in all of us. The tiny pods will burst instantly when you touch the ends and the seeds simply explode in all directions. Hence their other common name: "Touch-Me-Not."

Names: Touch-Me-Not, Spotted Jewelweed, Impatiens capensis
Family: Touch-me-not (Balsaminaceae)
Flowering time: July-October.
Leaves: Alternate, oval; coarsely-toothed, feather veined; 3-8 mm long.
Stem: Succulent; brittle, exudes juice where broken.
Fruit: Swollen capsule that explodes when touched upon maturity.
Height: 0.5 to 1.5 m.
Habitat: Wet areas, such as river banks, beaver ponds, creeks; usually found not far from patches of poison ivy.

Tech: Shot in RAW, converted, cropped, resized and sharpened subject only

Thanks for looking and have a fun-filled day

Hi Silke,
A beautiful and unusual flower. Informative note and a fine photo. Well done. Thanks for sharing.

Jim

YES! I have used it as a child 60 years ago as an herbal cure for poison ivy back ion the old Indian woods of Ohio. It works faster than anything on the shelves and oddly enough it always grows right nearby the ivy. Odd thing nature is... and your note is perhaps timely for some, who knows...Great information and lovely picture.

Bob

A beautiful flower - different and different is good. I love flowers that don't look like all the others. Wonderful delicate composition! :)

Hello Silke,
I am little bit confused with this specie as I think that I mix two that are similar. Are they the ones that grow near lakes and rivers? Or the ones that become white in fall?... Anyway, this is a detailed and well composed picture with very nice colors and DOF. These are beautiful and delicate little ones... :) Thanks,
Claudine

Interesante flor que no conocía.
Perfecto encuadre y muy buenos detalles.
La nota es bastante completa.
Saludos amiga y muchas gracias, JL.
