[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Sincere thanks to Jim White (jmirah) for pointing me in the right direction on this one.
The enlarged and flattened hindleg tibia of this bug identify it as a member of the "Leaf-footed Bug" family.
This one appears to be the Western conifer seed bug (Leptoglossus occidentalis). They are relatively large bugs, getting to be one inch in length and have a long sucking mouthpart that pierces the cones. When insect is not feeding, the feeding tube is carried between the base of the legs.

Sadly I did not have my macro lens with me when I found this good-sized nightmare clinging to the side of my car.
I slid some leaves under him for the purpose of this shot only.
There is no pixillation in this shot: but rather the mottled appearance is caused by fine grey hairs on the body of this creature.

I make no apologies for not doing any PP work on this fellow -- he is just the way I found him. I have put a more "attractive" version in the workshop, achieved by decreasing the brightness in brightness/contrast, however, the paler version posted here is true to the original. The rather pale leaf colours are due to the fact that we have suffered an extended dry spell here. In some areas less than 10 km from this spot watering the lawn has been outlawed with a hefty $5,000 fine attached in case you should be tempted to do it even at night.

Thanks for your help once again

Have a sweet-smelling day

Hi Silke,
It is from the Leaf-footed Bug family(a true bug). A very nice capture with great exposure and detail. Excellent color and POV.

TFS
Jim

I'll bet it is in the stinky bug family...some in England have been calling them shield bugs. Smells like sour apples...goes good with a frozen daiquiri.....well maybe not. Good capture tho! Nice and clear. A not so fun insect to have hanging around in bunches in the home.

Bob

Excellent capture with the detail and color! The photo is crisp, beady eyes and all. Nicely done.

Hello Silke,
This bug may not be a beauty but you've taken an excellent shot of it, despite the lack of macro lens! The placed leaves form a good BG and the bug itself is pretty sharp.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Silke,

A nice image of the Western conifer seed bug, the photo has a good composition, sharpness and nice colors. thanks for sharing.

Pierre

I'm sure another Western Conifer Seed Bug would find this one beautiful. :)

Great shot...love the 'rawness' of it...no make-up/no workshop/ no touch-up.

Hi Silke,
Always good to see that somebody could inform you on the ID that quickly. I just wanted to mention the contrast but then saw that you already made a WS version of it. I do like the details you managed to capture and the overall composition. That lens always surprises me for it great sharpness.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Silke. Good entry into the world of macro. I enjoy seeing these creatures in others photos rather than in reality at time. Good clarity in this one. TFS. Murray.

Hi Silke
Never saw that critter before and we have this monster here!
I prefer the WS view as the contrast and sharpness is better, which permit a better view of the details of this surprising insect.

Have a good day
Charles

Although you did not have your macro lens, you managed to take a very nice ... macro! Good idea putting some leaves under your subject. Interesting note and nice of you, Silke, to have posted the more "attractive" version in the WS. Merci!
