[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I have admired the butterflies in others’ galleries for some time, especially those in the wild. Many times I despaired of ever capturing one. Nor did it matter what kind of butterfly it was. I wanted just once to be able to freeze one of those delicate creatures with their exquisite patterns on my screen.

Yesterday’s excursion had nothing to do with butterflies. Yesterday I was stuck in The Rex, a downtown jazz bar, beside a very nice man who had very un-nice breath. I excused myself to stretch my legs and walked a block to a café for a take-out coffee and then walked around the heritage building next door.

My eyes were caught by the fluttering motes of sunshine hovering around the flowers. When I approached from the west, they fluttered away. I walked around so that the sun was now behind them instead of behind me. This time, they ignored me! Is that the secret all of you clever butterfly photographers have been keeping? Put the sun behind the butterflies? The result is here, in one of several captures that I was able to achieve before I had to hurry back to the bar for the end of a set.

This butterfly is common in North America. Every schoolchild knows it: The Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus). For me, it is the Monarch I found when I left The Rex -- ironic, is it not?

Thanks for looking, for reading and for critiquing.

Have a joyful week.

Hello Silke,
Congratulations on your first butterfly! A very nice shot too!! I tend to try and have the sun behind me but sometimes they work out really well in the shade too! The little streaks of sun here look really good and highlight the colours. I like the sharp details and the composition is great! Well done!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Silke,

Hello Silke !
Congratulations on your 1st Monarch ! It is always a great moment, I remember my 1st swallowtail like it was yesterday, I was soooo happy ! :-) And it is a gorgeous picture, with excellent details, perfect composition and POV, beautiul blurred BG and wonderful pose of the butterfly. Maybe a bit dark for me, but this is just my opinion, it is a gorgeous picture. Very well done !
Valerie.

There is a certain excitement in first butterflies. I too have shared this feeling. And a Monarch of all variety for your first. Very nicely done. Can you imagine a Monarch almost, and I say almost, being upstaged by the flowers:-) Beautiful colors all around.

Bob

Hello Silke,

Hello Silke,
In this shot the flower is as much the focus of attention as the Monarch, the exposure of the flower being spot-on, while the slightly underexposed Monarch looks like a shady attendant to the flower. I decided against a WS to brighten up the Monarch because I decided that it looks good as it is!
Excellent sharpness and composition.
TFS,
Ivan

Hi Silke,
Butterfly chasing is somehow tricky. The only things I know are that low temperatures, rain, sunset and sunrise work better. Digestion time make them calm, a TN member told me!
Other secret has to do with software. Horia, for example, made a miracle with a dim and soft focused butterfly I captured.
Anyway your butterfly is really nice, with good focus, background, pose and pov. I'm not an expert in image software, but I know a little and I'm going to do with your butterfly the same as I did with your swam :-)
Best regads,
José M.

Hello Silke,
beautiful light to show plexippus. The whole composition is attractive, just with the colorful flower and butterfly in focus. Sharpness is also pretty good.
Best wishes, Peter

Hello Silke,
Sharp fine details, and the pattern is well reproduced!
I wish you had same light on all of the butterfly as to the left, that would really make the insect stand out...
Attractive well balanced composition!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Silke,
My compliment towards this outstanding composition of butterfly from you this time!
very good exposure and focus in sharpness and details
both butterfly and flowers were well captured
well done
cheers
Tony

Hi Silke,
Congratulations with your first b'fly photo. It looks we both have a first today. Your first step in b'fly photography is immediately a perfect one, with a wonderful composition and beautiful light. The details in both the flower and b'fly are perfect. Maybe a touch more contrast would help.
TFS,
Niek

Oh, Silke! This is fabulous! Fabulous because the butterfly is so sharp and detailed but also fabulous because you have captured that first elusive butterfly!

The butterfly is posing so nicely and the tiny shaft of light is just detailing the beauty of his his wing colours.

Well done, my fried!
Bev :-)

Hi Silke,

Hi Silke. Very fine butterfly photo with excellent sharpness and colours. The monarch is certainly a faorite in the garden and good for kiddies to study the metamorphosis. Very good contribution. TFS. Murray.
