Common Milkweed, a.k.a Asclepias syriaca Butterfly flower, Silkweed, Silky Swallow-wort and Virginia Silkweed: hmmm that’s a lot of names for one plant but that isn’t surprising since this plant grows all over the North American continent east of the Rocky Mountains.

Every schoolchild knows that the caterpillar of the Monarch butterfly lives off this one and many a schoolteacher has searched the plant for cocoons to take to class for a science lesson. The plant grows very well in open areas and so has become even more common with the partial deforestation of the continent.

The name comes from the fact that it exudes a thick milky juice when broken, something I used to be very wary of, believing it to be poisonous ... ... ah, the stories we tell each other when we are children! In fact, the leaves and the seedpod are toxic for sheep. Humans would have to eat rather large quantities for it to affect them, but it would, eventually. And this fall, when children are once again hunting for cocoons, many of them will still be telling each other: “Careful! That white stuff’ll kill ya,” never wondering why the teacher didn’t warn them about that too :)

Hi Silke,
Nice capture and interesting facts. I think this is a different plant from what I have always called "milkweed". It has long banana shaped pods that are full of seeds that blow in the wind. I remember how sticky the "milk" would make my hands when I would pick the pods as a kid. Anyway, a very lovely photo.

Hello Silke,
Very nice capture of these pretty flowers in beautiful light casting shadows on the leaf. I like your composition and the details are sharp and colours look natural.
Many thanks, Ulla

I did know as a child but had forgotten. There is also a bug which hangs out on this...milk beetle? Good description and photo. Notations for some good citation as well...

Hello Silke,

This is just super! I love your composition of the flower buds overlaying the leaf, but ... that fabulous shadow makes it a work of art as well! Well done, my friend!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Silke

A wonderful shot of common milkweed. The shot shows the florets and the leaf very well.Well focused with very good details. The POV and DOF are well done. These plants are considered noxious weeds in some areas, but they are a vital plant in the survival of the Monarch butterfly.TFS
