[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It wasn't until I joined TrekNature that I realized that these were not moths.
And thanks to Argus, I also now know that it is not even a species that is native to North America. I had identified it as a Least Skipper (Ancyloxypha numitor. Ivan, however, has kindly informed me that it is an "Essex Skipper (Thymelicus lineola) [... and that] it was accidentally introduced into the London Ontario area in 1910 and has since spread to other areas."
To me they look like motes of sunshine from a distance, a sight to gladden the heart.

The flower goes by the incongruous name of Viper's Bugloss Echium vulgare and is another of the many plants that were introduced to North America by European settlers. It is now, unfortunately, considered an invasive species in some areas, most especially Washington.

Tech: Shot in RAW, slight cropping, highlight/shadow adjustment, resized, sharpened, noise reduction on background

Thanks for visiting and have a wonderful weekend

Hi Silke,

A good POV of the least skipper and of the flower, the photo has a good composition, sharpness and nice colors. Thanks for sharing.

Pierre

Bravo on #101! :)
A lovely shot - well composed, summery lighting, wonderful colors, nice and sharp. :)

Hello Silke,
The bright sunlight tells about a fine summer day!
A pleasant capture of this little creature, fine details with a tad of backlight...
A well composed presentation, good colour palette!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Silke,
Not an easy shot on this little guy. They normally stay very close to the ground. You managed the difficult light conditions pretty darn well. Rich color saturtation and sharp detail. Usually at this close distance I am at f18-22 for max. DOF. Well done!
Scott

I have a long list of things to learn and RAW is one which I have at the bottom, although it seems to work very well for some, as is the case here. Skipper! I see a few of them here on TN, bit in the "flesh". This adds some color to the Skipper in its companion flower. Nicely done.

Hello Silke,
Being amazed to see that this Skipper looks identical to the European Small Skipper (Thymelicus lineola), I looked it up in my old Field Guide by Klots and found that indeed it was accidentally introduced into the London Ontario area in 1910 and has since spread to other areas.
This means that I can confirm that this is what you call the European Skipper and not the Least Skipper.
I couldn't draw this conclusion without the aid of your sharp shot taken from a fine POV.
It is well composed with the flower, the ID of which I am ignorant, but it looks like it looks like a kind of Bugloss (Echium species - Boraginaceae)
TFS and have a nice weekend!
Ivan

cheers
Tony

Hi silke. I have to thank Ivan for a lot of help with my ID on some butterflies too. You have captured a fine pose with natural colours. good detail on the butterfly and plant. a nice POV/DOF. well done TFS. good notes too.
Nick..
have a good weekend

Those notes are very interesting Silke as I saw them too and I think that I have one or two pictures of this specie. Argus... He knows everything :)!! This is a nice composition with superb colors. I guess that your tinny model was moving a little as we can feel it in the picture but this is nothing very important actually :) Thanks!

Hello Silke

A beautiful close up of this skipper on bugloss. The lighting is well done with warm, well saturated colours. The focus and details are very good.Nicely composed in the frame.TFS

Rob

Silke,
You are one great photographer. And, thanks for identifying it as: Essex Skipper (Thymelicus lineola.) You see, I too, in Alberta have registered this species and I did not know what it was.
Re: the flower. Janice Smith = lovenature= from Cochrane may know its name. She too is a walking encyclopaedia.
Great colours. Well presented.
Best regards,
Mario.
