Fun with Names!

When I was growing up, I knew this lovely meadow flower as "Butter and Eggs." The other common name is not nearly as pretty: Toadflax. My mother referred to it as Löwenmaul (lion's mouth).
And, according to Wikipedia the Linaria vulgaris goes by a host of other names, most of which make me smile (now take a deep breath and try to read them all in a single breath :D):

brideweed, bridewort, butter haycocks, bread and butter, bunny haycocks, bunny mouths, calf's snout, Continental weed, dead men's bones, devil's flax, devil's flower, doggies, dragon bushes, eggs and bacon, eggs and butter, false flax, flaxweed, fluellen, gallweed, gallwort, imprudent lawyer, impudent lawyer, Jacob's ladder, monkey flower, North American ramsted, rabbit flower, rancid, ransted, snapdragon, wild flax, wild snapdragon, wild tobacco, yellow rod and yellow toadflax.

It's another of those naturalized plants in North America, having been brought from Europe by settlers of centuries past. And that makes it a weed ... ... ... and another candidate for eradication in some American States.

Tech: shot in RAW, converted and resized without cropping

Thanks for looking. I wish you many days of smiles!

Hi Silke,

Very pretty for a "weed." The lovely yellow looks wonderful against the black background.

I laughed reading the list of aliases this one has. Sometimes I wonder about wikipedia.

Hello Silke

Another mystery solved for me.I always thought these were some sort of snapdragon.

A very good POV showing the florets very well. The colours and lighting are very good. The DOF is excellent and the flower is well focused and shows well against a lovely dark OOF BG.TFS

Hi Silke
Nicely presented flower of beautiful plant.

I like composition (but I think that you could crop it in a different way - it is too much empty space on the bottom and we cant see the stem(shallow DOF) and it is spoiling the compo a little bit)

Very good light and contrast.

Also very nice black buckground.

Unfortunately there are some problem with sharpness and the DOF could be a little bit better (it is to shallow)

I am wondering also how it looks with white (or white and yellow) frame

Best wishes
Krzysztof

Interesting light, nice color Silke.
The delicate beauty of the flower is contrasted very well against the dark OOF BG..Great details too :)
Well done!
Howard

Good capture of yellow toadflax.
