[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is not really a mountain, but there is not category that quite covers it!

I set myself a difficult task recently. Every day that I could, I was out scouting the Oak Ridges Moraine that passes through southern Ontario just 10 kilometres north of where I live. I wanted to capture something of the area that would convey its fragility. I have driven through it from south to north and back again. But I may have to try for an east - west drive some time instead, a daunting task since it stretches a full 160 km. Beneath its rolling hills, clear lakes, and green river valleys, are hundreds of meters of glacially deposited sand and gravel: an ideal filter for the water that quenches the giant thirst of Canada's most populous area.

The moraine was created when the glaciers retreated and left behind the sand and gravel they had created as they scraped across bedrock and boulders and ground them down. The soil that has gradually developed on top of this is still rather thin and it takes a long time for vegetation to gain a foothold.

But the sand and gravel underneath have a great value to builders and so there are many sand and gravel pits dotting the area. Behind this ridge, almost out of sight of the highway is one such pit.

The area was developed for farming by early settlers who simply deforested the land. Conscription in World War One, as well as the great depression several years later, resulted in the mass abandonment of farms and resulted in a dustbowl. But the land has slowly healed itself as you can see by the mix of vegetation that has developed. There are many conservation groups that continue to fight to allow the land to rest since the sandy gravelly soil is the best natural filter for drinking water.

Shot in RAW, converted to jpg, reduced the strength of the blues created by the polarizing filter by reducing the colour saturation in the sky, resized and sharpened edges.

you can really sense the vitality of this area in this shot. Wonderful colour in the trees and well composed. Still waiting for the trees in the New Forest to turn over here :o) Great work on the PP too, well done.

Ah yes...and now these wonderful colors will appear. We shall see them not only outside, buton the computer, TV and news. And it is a safe bet to say no bad picture of fall is ever taken.

Each country has its own particular vegetation and trees. This part of the world you picture is wonderful as done. Your first but I'll chance a guess you will have more. Great start.Very nice notations

Hello Silke,
This is a nice landscape that reminds me of a nature reserve not far from us. I like the colours, the tones of green and orange yellows set in a nice composition and the FG bordering of young fir trees is effective.

What a beautiful scene this is! Just like the ones you would see in a travel brochure. The colors are simply breathtaking. Wonderful composition and nature at its best. WE don't have the change of seasons here so I really appreciate this photo.

Dear Madame,
The good visual for picture but tilted horizon and less effective foreground disturbing my eyes. As I had enjoyed some good pictures from you earlier so instead of pleasing you I preferred to locate some faults.
1)The partial cropped small trees on the foreground is disturbing to me.
2)The colours of the grass and soil are not distinct in the centre area of the picture.
3) Due to wide frame the colourful trees lost their stance.
4)The blue sky is overlapping the total visual.
These are my personal view as a photographer/ illustrator.

It would be interesting to see this same scene in a month and then again in the winter. The trees here are starting to change color also, it seems almost overnight. I think you've definitely captured the change in the season well, great colors and light, well done.
