My First Macro

I wanted to try out my new macro lens on the goldenrod, so I switched lenses after I had captured yesterday’s ”Pure Gold” and waded into the flowers. After a few minutes, I had company. This character apparently liked the flowers even more than I did, for very different reasons. I decided that he seemed peaceable enough to keep on shooting, although I probably would not have stayed there without the camera, nor gotten this close! I guess this is another example of a time when my camera overcame my fear :). I will however, admit that this creature was moving faster than I liked and I thus accidentally cut off the wingtips in this capture (I hope that the composition makes up for that a little??) However, it turns out that I need not have worried too much.

Thanks to Howard Cheek (Marhowie), I now know that this is a Paper Wasp (Polistes fuscatus). Unlike the yellowjackets and hornets to whom they are related, paper wasps generally only attack if their nest is threatened. Their name is based on the fact that they construct water-resistant nests that look like they’re made of paper. In fact, since these nests are made of fibres collected from dead wood and plant stems mixed with their own saliva, their nests may have inspired our ancestors to try a similar process to make paper.

Another interesting fact about paper wasps comes from Howard Cheek: See Marhowie’s “Communal Life”!!!

As to yesterday’s promise about proof that the goldenrod upon whose nectar my new friend is dining does not cause hayfever: you can see here how sticky the pollen is. This is not pollen than can be windborne and therefore cannot be the cause of the seasonal allergy from which so many people suffer.

And now a question for macro lens users. This is my first macro (Lens: Tamron 90mm F/2.8 Di)and I was hugely disappointed by the dof. What are your preferred aperture settings? As always, your feedback is much appreciated.

Tech: shot in RAW, converted, resized for TN and sharpened (no cropping)

Thanks for looking and have a wonderful week.

Hello Silke,
Interesting macro of this wasp in a fine pose on the golden flowers. I expect you cropped the wings in order to get closer which is a pity but it's interesting to see the sharp parts. Good natural colours and a lovely background.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Aha! I have found The Lady of the Lens. What a nice title. I like it. Sounds like a tour boat:-) Ouch is all that I can say. When I saw how close I looked immediately at the lens to see just how close. Super shot. Even the ones who sting, do their jobs as carriers of pollen. Very nice framing so simple. The subject is good enough!!
Bob

Superb macro of the Wasp with your new lens, Silke.
The focus on the front portion of the insect is razor sharp. Together with yellow flowers, the composition looks just great.
TFS and regards.

Hello Silke,
Wow, great close-up shot you've taken.
Excellent details and beautiful colours, POV and OOF are alos great.
TFS and regards,

Hello Silke,
you selected an interesting but also 'difficult' point of view. However, I'm not really disappointed about the result. The focus is just right on the face and thorax of the wasp - the non-sharp abdomen and flowers in the background lead to a more 3-dimensional impression. By a more lateral point of view parts of the abdomen would have become sharper. But this results in a picture with a different character. So, I underline that the result achieved here with f11 is pretty good. One possibility to exploit the depth of field here is to focus on the head, to freeze the focus and then to move only a little towards the object, so that the focus plane is shifted 1 or 2 mm backwards (you donot need sharpness in front of the head).
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Silke
Your first macro turned out wonderful...wow. Awesome details and sharpness. It would have been nice to see the whole wasp. I can see how much more detail can be captured with a macro. I'm impressed. Well done.

Hi Silke. Well done for a first try with the new lens. you have captured a fine well detail shaot. with rich colours. good focus on the head and body . well done TFS.
Nick..

Thats wonderful Silke, amazing macro with wonderful details and excellent sharpness, splendid colors, very well done, bravo, ciao Silvio

Hello Silke excellent point of of focus considering the shallow dof and fine detail beautifully composed I don't mind that the wings are clipped but I think it would be nice if they were complete tfs rgds necip.

Hello Silke,
This is an original picture with very interesting composition. I like those tones of colors a lot and natural exposure. I don't know much about macro as I take my macro pictures with the 100-400mm @ 400mm :) I'm surprise though that you didn't get more DOF at this aperture but I like this effect anyway :) Thanks!
Claudine

Hi Silke,
my congratulations to this powerful plunge into the world of macro! Excellently placed focus, a very dynamic pose, and superbly managed rich colours - a feast for the eyes to watch that wasp enjoying its generously served meal.
I love beautiful Solidago canadensis that is also bringing golden colours and a lot of nectar to many parts of our country - a well received newcomer to our continent.
Thank you! My best regards,
Peter

hello silke,
nice work, the image is sharp with good details, the focus on the head is perfect, liked the colours and the pov very much,
well done,

Hi Silke,

A nice macro image of the the paper wasp on the yellow flower, the photo has a good composition, sharpness and nice colors. thanks for sharing.

Pierre

Hi Silke,
Don't be mad, get glad! ;}
DOF comes at a premium with macro using a DSLR. But done properly, a DSLR will produce the best quality work.
I don't know where to start, there are many factors affecting DOF.
The available light is probably the single biggest factor. In lower light you will be limited..unless you're willing to work at it with a tripod, remote wire, proper flash, etc..

Try using your lens on a bright sunny day at your ISO 200 here. Minus the exposure by up to a stop and put the sun behind you if you can.
OK, that's your lesson for today..Times up, or I'll have to start charging ya! :)
Howard
PS - BTW, great shot. For this POV/composition, F/11 works fine.

Marvelous shot with your new macro. The Paper Wasp looks more glamourous with the flowers.

Hello Silke,
Congratulations on your first macro! If this is really your first then it is a very good result, especially when you start at the deep end with this POV of the Paper Wasp and the important aspect of the wasp is sharp. I might have cropped it differently if that were possible but that does not detract from the quality of this shot.
Please continue!
TFS and have a nice weekend,
Ivan

THIS IS AWESOME.
I am so impressed...your work is always good but this is a whole new direction. I love it!

Bonjour Silke, congratulations for your first macro . Razorsharpe details on the head and perfect colors too. It's a pity that wings are cut!! Anyway good work, Didier.

Hi Silke,
This one is really great. As Linda mentioned, even better then on TL. The details and clarity in this photo are perfect. I love the soft feeling this photo has. The exposure and color in this photo are excellent. It seems you are immediately in control of your new lens.
