Migration
Empty Nest is one of those terms in the modern English language that conjures up far more than the phrase states. For older folks it means a time when all the children have gone, so it brings a bit of nostalgia too. We forget the tough times we had raising our children and remember the good ones. That is how I felt the instant I saw this empty nest hanging over my head in a maple tree last weekend.
And there is nostalgia too because we know that the birds who occupied this little tree and claimed it for their own have now either left for warmer climes or are building up their calorie supply for the long trip south.

Our feathered friends migrate to warmer climes so they can continue to find food. But first they must build up a fat reserve to fuel the long flight. The greater the distance they must travel, the more fat they need. Small birds double their body weight before they leave, building up a reserve that will keep them going for the up to 90 hour non-stop flight. And since flapping their wings uses up a great deal of energy, they climb to great heights to glide on thermals. Although pilots have reported birds as high as 29,000 feet and more, most stay under 3,000 feet.

Hello Silke,
This is very well observed and a lovely autumnal composition! The light brings out the lovely colours and the diagonal branches add interest. Yes, many birds have left us too now but others are gradually coming down here from the north as it gets colder up there.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

I am wondering what kind of nest it is....very nice through and quite visible through the maze of wonderful fall colors. You are always a day ahead of me..but in a goood way. I love this piece..it is subtle and says something as if in a whisper...some secret of things to come...

Hi Silke,
Yes, I know full well the syndrome you speak of..Got over that very quickly ;)
The photo does show the "empty" nest, like an abandoned house with over-grown vegetation. Nice autumn colors as the leafs turn..turn, turn :)
Well done!
Howard

Hi Silke,

It's eerie - I was waiting for the rain to stop to go out and take a picture of an empty nest in my yard. Wouldn't have been half as nice as yours since we have no changing autumn leaves - just green. This is lovely - I love the branches thru the leaves.

Jane

My friend Silke,
I am sharing the same feeling as you as I watched this beautiful captured of yours!
The exposure and focus is spot on and the great use of the light that makes shadows on the leafs and it's so beautiful!
very well done and well seen

Hi Silke,
Oh I love all the bright fall leaves! What a pretty photo with all the highlights from the bright shinning sun. TFS

Hi Silke,
I see from your latest selection that autumn is on it way.Nature creates such beautiful colours during this season and sadly over here autumn is hardly felt as it is short and the trees mostly evergreen. The nest is well noticed and I like how the light has illuminated the leaves....take care.
Regards, David

Hello Silke,
Powerful image with the changing leaves and empty nests, gives us a sense of sadness in a way. Thanks for your great eye Silke.

Hello Silke!

This is beautifull post. Not only perfect, autumnal picture which is very, very good, but also your note. Colorfull leaves, blue sky - best part of autumn before hard winter. And I like your title - it sounds almost like emptiness.

Hi Silke,
more amazing colour from you and wonderful lighting too. Nice splash of blue from the sky in the BG adds to the palette. Like the theme of this post, gives a real sense of the change in the seasons.
Paul

Hello Silke,
This is an excellent study in autumn tints against the light, the abandoned nest being the focus of attention. Superb camera mamagement here with excellent sharpness and exposure in a fine composition.
Well done and TFS!

Silke, What a colorful shot. Lovely you have shot many things in this single shot. Lovely Ganesh

Another simple shot - well done - nothing elaborate...you just present what you see and that's the beauty of this shot!

Hello Silke

Great colours and lighting...the sad truth is the birdies are leaving us for warmer destinations.Wonderful clarity and well composed.I think the blue sky in the BG really contrasts nicely with the yellow and orange leaves.TFS

HI Silke,
This is beautiful the way the sun is shining thru. The leaf color is so nice. I like the shot because it is unexpected. Sort of like finding an Easter egg on an egg hunt.
