I will be honest here: I am not a forester or a tree expert, despite the attempts of the man I dated when I was 20 and who would later become a forester for the St. Clair River Conservation Authority. But I do know a little about trees, so the “keys” of this tree said “Maple” to me. But the shape of the leaf had me a bit confused, and my old ID books are still packed in a storage locker in another town!

So I resorted to the web, using “keys” and “tree” as my search terms. And sure enough, it is indeed a species of maple: Here in Canada it is known as the Manitoba Maple, while in the neighbouring U.S., it is known as Box Elder, Boxelder Maple or Maple Ash among many others. In fact its many other names simply proves how widespread it is on this continent.

The reason that Acer negundo is so prolific lies in those keys hanging from the branch: not only are they prolific, but they are also very hardy and fertile. And that is a good thing, for this tree needs both a male and a female to reproduce, unlike most maples.

On the other hand, it is not such a good thing in places where it has been imported and naturalized. In Australia it has been labelled as a pest invasive species and attempts are made to eradicate where it is found because the Boxelder Bug which acts as a control on this continent did not travel with it to control the species there.

I was thinking of these the other day but could not find any bunch which had no mold or rot. These would have been simply perfect. Good eye in spotting them. Nice idea and well titled. A fascinating tree...in all of it's cycles...
Bob

Hi Silke!

Great notes for a great picture. I like the subject, the composition and the point of view. The colors are simply superb. But more than this I like the lighting that makes this picture to be an outstanding one. The light that allows us to see the delicate framework of the keys in a delightful interplay of light and shadow.

Just a beautiful picture...

Kind regards

Markus

Silke,
I too, personally, consider this female MANITOBA MAPLE a real pest. It drops its seed all over the place and before you know it you have a little "FOREST" on your hands.
Yesterday I clicked a couple of photos of a SQUIRREL feeding on its seeds. So, you see, it does have its uses.
This is a GREAT GREAT image. Your notes are EXCELLENT.
The clarity and focusing are A 1.
Best regards,
Mario.
P.S. I've placed the whole story on the "lady bug"; I should have dedicated to you. Next time.!!! Perhaps the Squirrel on our MANITOBA MAPLE.

Hello Silke

The back lighting is wonderful. The colours are bright and well saturated.well focused with sharp details.TFS

Hi Silke,
The beautiful backlighting really makes this shot. Well composed and framed with a nice OOF backround. Awesome detail and texture shown in the seed pods due to the lighting. As kids we called there helicopter seeds for the way they twirl to the ground when blown by the wind.

Nice title and a very artistically done shot! I like how you have the light playing through the seeds. Good job!

Hello Silke,
The fine backlight create a little beauty from this simple details!
Very well done with super colour and details, subject is well framed!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Silke,

I would have said ash, if you had asked me but the name is less important than the treatment of the subject! You have used the light wonderfully here; it illuminates the keys and the leaves and creates subtle changes in tone! I like this and your excellent composition very much!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Silke,
Another beautifully composed photo with an excellent note. Excellent color, detail and POV. Very well captured.

Hello Silke,
Wonderfully baklit and very artistic image with excellentnotes. What child hasn't played with these seeds for thier helicopter spinning down. Great job Silke glad you are on the mend.
Rick

Hi Silke,
I just love the backlight in this photo. It has illuminated the seeds and leaves very beautifully and created a golden glow on the seeds. I've read your note, or should I call it quest to find the ID, with much interest. For me ID-ing a plant, tree or fungi is also a difficult thing to do. Eventhough I love nature, my knowledge of it is very limited.
Great work on the choosing the right aperture, it puts all the seeds in focus and also gave you a nice soft blurred BG.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Silke,
the autumn sun highlighting fragile structures of maple seeds nad leaves in most beautiful transparency - very well seen and recorded.
Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter
