A departure from the usual notes -- in honour of Thanksgiving -- please forgive me.

Pied Beauty
GLORY be to God for dappled things—
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;
Landscape plotted and pieced—fold, fallow, and plough;
And áll trádes, their gear and tackle and trim.
All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change:
Praise him.

~ Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844–89)

Although the date for Canada’s Thanksgiving was not firmly set on the second Monday of October until 31 Jan 1957, it had been celebrated here for even longer than in the US. The date was established by Parliament in keeping with our fall season and the earlier onset of winter.

Canadian Thanksgiving draws on 4 traditions:
The first is harvest celebrations in European peasant societies for which the symbol was the cornucopia (horn of plenty).

The second is the almost forgotten tradition started by the explorer Martin Frobisher in the eastern Arctic in 1578, when he gave formal thanks for his safe journey.

The third is the Pilgrims' celebration of their first harvest in Massachusetts 43 years later (1621), from which we adopted the traditional menu of turkey, squash and pumpkin.

The fourth is First Nations celebrations of "the three sisters" (i.e., beans, corn, and squash) during the fall harvest. (Source: The Canadian Encyclopaedia et al)

Hi Silke,
love the way the changing colours seem to merge effortlessly here from green to gold to rusty red. Very well seen as usual with lovely light...and happy thanks giving too.

It sounds like a title my mother would have come up with. Only because she frequently used the word, dappled. She used it in relationship to plants. I believe it was a Poinsettia which I heard it first. Very nice way to remember your National Holiday. Have a good one. Use you Loonies in the US and save now eh?

Hello Silke,
Beautiful patch of Autumn in the greenery of this maple. I love the lighting colours and composition.
I wonder if Thanksgiving is beginning to take on another dimension as we are still able to feed most of our population on this planet despite what we are doing to our environment.
Maybe there will be a Planet Care Day!
Thanks for this one,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Silke

A beautiful display of autumn colours.Very appropriate for Thanksgiving.The notes are wonderful and informative,I learned something new about this holiday.The focus is sharp and well detailed.Very good POV and DOF.Nicely done.TFS

Thank you, Silke! I am learning so much about Canadian traditions and history!

This certainly says 'Autumn' (Fall). The light is superb how it shafts through the branches and between the leaves creating a multitude of tonal colours! It almost has the qualities of an abstract painting!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Silke,
No forgiveness needed on my part. Happy Thanksgiving to you too! I am an American living in Canada so I could very well celebrate both of the holidays, but you sorta need family to really do it right and Alas my Husband is still out there somewhere!!
We'll give thanks and cook that turkey when he gets home though! I love your beautiful fall leaves, and yes, its the times we see all the beautiful things in our world that we know how they got there and how blessed we all are. I know I am!! Thanks for the beautiful photo!
