Research is fun – no question about it. And looking up information on fog was no exception.
We all know the basics of what fog is: water vapour in the air that has condensed into drops of water. I remember enough of my geography lectures to tell you that fog forms when the difference between the air temperature and the dewpoint (the temperature at which water condenses) is 3°C (5°F) or less; and the lower the air temperature, the less the amount of moisture needed in the air to turn into water and to form fog. So it is natural that we get more fogs this time of year because the rains leave the ground wet allowing more water vapour to hang above the earth and create the fog. All of that I already knew.

What I didn’t know was that there are many types of fog.
The typical autumn fog is called “radiation fog” and is caused by the cooling of land after sunset, producing condensation in the nearby air.
Then there is “advection fog” caused by moist air passing over a cool surface. This is most common at sea when tropical air meets cooler waters; the residents of the California coast will be very familiar with this form!
The exact opposite is “Steam Fog” or “evaporation fog” which is caused by cold air passing over water or land that is much warmer.
“Upslope fog” is created when a wind blows up a mountain slope, quickly cooling as it rises and therefore condensing the moisture content.
“Valley fog,” which forms in mountain valleys is the result of a temperature inversion: cold air settling into a valley while warmer air passes across the mountains above.
Those who live in areas of extreme cold (temperatures at or below -35°C [-30°F]) will know about “ice fog” in which the water vapour freezes into tiny crystals of ice.

And there is one final kind of fog: the "Firewater Fog," which is caused by the consumption of too much alcohol ;-)

When I was out shooting this picture, an old children’s song popped into my head:
One misty moisty morning, when cloudy was the weather,
I met a withered old man a-clothed all in leather,
He was clothed all in leather with a cap beneath his chin,
Singin': "How d' you do and how d' you do and how d' you do again"

Hi Silke,
Firewater Fog!I know a little about that but it sure makes for a poor picture, lol!Your picture however is not poor but rather an expression of mood and mystery.I have always enjoyed foggy days for the sombre feel about them but not in a melancholy way but for a sense of the unknown that goes with most things just out of view because of the fog.An atmospheric photo and it imparts "one misty moisty morning" very well,I like it. Bob

Hello Silke,
Oh, no, this is the England I don't like! There are too many "fogs" and when I first visited England we had Smog as well!! But I like your capture very much, very simple and spooky! A nice POV and an excellent composition. Interesting note too!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Silke,
Superb ! In a single word.
TFS.

Hi Silke,

A difficult picture to take account of the weather condition, you got good results, the trees are well framed by the fog and it gave you a great composition. Thanks for sharing.

Pierre

Cute notes!

Hello Silke,
To me as both a naturalist and photographer, fog is a damn nuisance! But you have made good use of it in this well presented shot, showing three trees fading away in it in an excellent composition.
Fog reminds me the Weaver's song:
'When I was a bachelor and live by myself,
I worked at the weaver's trade,
And the only, only thing that I ever did wrong was to woo a fair young maid.
I wooed her in the winter time
and in the summer too
and the only only thing that I ever did wrong was to save her from the foggy, foggy dew!
Thanks and best wishes, Ivan

Hi Silke,
A difficult shot to capture without looking artificial. A fine composition with a great note. Nicely done.

One of your best...It conveys a mood for sure. Sometimes these fog shots can convey unknown and waiting or not so good feeling..but in your notes I think you show transitional weather and of course many will be stuck with last summers captures. I am wondering what will happen this winter...a good show and frame Silke.
Bob

Hello Silke

A very artistic shot, perhaps you could subtitle "The Tree Amigos",groan. The exposure is very good considering the difficult lighting conditions you had to battle. The composition is very good.I like the mood created.TFS

Hi Silke,
This is a wonderful composition. We don't see more often this kind of picture on TN. This one is EXCELLENT! Very nice and quiet place it seems to be!
Thanks,

Claude

Bonne idée Silke, et surtout

Hi Silke!

When I read all the critiques to this picture I don't understand why I always hear people say how ugly and sad foggy days are...

:-)

Well, we are photographers and look at the fog in a different way. As you have seen, I like fog and the atmosphere it generates very much. It's a normal consequence that I'm very sensitive for your picture and the mood it expresses. I'm also pleased that you had the courage to present a foggy atmosphere.

Thank you for sharing it with us and for encouraging us to discover the beautiful side of fog.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Silke,
This looks like your first photo with your new font style. I'm glad to see that you were able to install it correctly.
I am a big fan of fog photos. Fog can play havoc with your white balance and exposure, so it adds a extra difficulty to photography. Both white balance and exposure has been perfectly controlled by you. The result is a wonderful soft green carpet and three stunning silhouttes. I really like the abstract feel to this photo.
TFS,
Niek

Brevity is the soul of wit ~ Simplicity is the heart of beauty. Marvelous tones, better to hide your talents with my dear. But don't worry, I have now discovered you. Where have you been all my life?
