When I was a little girl (a year or two ago :D), I spent a lovely part of several summers in a holiday camp for children. The woods beyond the cabin were full of these lovely knee-high plants I’d never seen before. The almost white leaves made the darkest woods seem full of light and erased any sense of the forest as being a dark and dangerous place (which it did seem at first to this city girl).
I am far more at ease with the woods now as an adult. Even so whenever I see these plants, I am immediately taken back to those early years and the way the woods became friendly simply through their happy light.

Updated ID:

Snow-on-the-mountain” (the name I first heard those many years ago) grows in shady places and is apparently related to the poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima). The Latin name is Euphorbia marginata and it is also known as ground-elder, herb Gerald, and bishop’s weed. It is used as a food plant by the larvae of several species of butterflies and moths. It appears that this little beauty, which is spreading through woods around the Niagara Escarpment of Southern Ontario is not native but is naturalised (coming from further west between Minnesota and Colorado in the US) and is now considered a nuisance as it spreads rapidly via underground roots, crowding out native plants! Like the poinsetta, it is poisonous and causes skin rashes! So much for my safe woods.

Unusual plant, nice composition and good info Ta!!

Hello Silke
I do like a nice varigated leaf and you have captured an example that is new to me..the focus is lovely and sharp with great framing..perhaps a touch overexposed but that is my opinion only.
Great work
Paul

I have never heard, nor seen. The title is most lovely or as my grandmother said "It is very elegant"...and she would have said that of this. She arraigned flowers for deep pocket friends many years. A lovely picture. An Elegant picture.
Bob

Hello Silke,
This is a very beautiful capture of this flower with variegated leaves. Great sharpness and lovely colours too. I'm puzzled though as it doesn't look a bit like the common Ground Elder!?
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Silke

A lovely capture of this beautiful plant.I can see that the flower is outshone by the wonderful variegated foliage.Excllent focus and detail. The colours are natural.I have seen this plant but it is not indigenous in this area and probably a transplant from elsewhere.TFS

Rob

Hello Silke,
The plant itself is more beautiful, and the flowers are hardly visible. Are these flowers fragrant?
Thanks for sharing.

Hello Silke,
A fine shot of an amazing plant with what look like variegated leaves that give one the impression that this is cultivated, but that this grows in the wild is to me fascinating. Superb technical qualities and composition. The carrot and parsley family is Umbeliferacae: are you sure that this is the same family?
Whatever, the notes are interesting too.
TFS,
Ivan

Hi Silke,
Very nice macro of this species. I shot this myself with the Olympus C8080 P&S quite a while back.
Excellent capture, I don't think I could've done it better myself ;)
Beautiful work,
Howard
PS - You should consider sending in your photo's to a magazine for consideration/publication. Just a got an email from Better Home's & Gardens on an image I submitted :)

Hi Silke,

This picture reminds me of a bride's bouquet. Very beautiful and elegant. Excellent details showing off the tiny flowers and the varigated leaves. I have not seen this before.
