Cool Facts

The House Finch was originally a bird of the southwestern United States and Mexico. In 1940 a small number of finches were turned loose on Long Island, New York, and they quickly started breeding. They spread across the entire eastern United States and southern Canada within the next 50 years.

The red or yellow color of a male House Finch comes from pigments that it gets in its food during molt. The more pigment in the food, the redder the male. Females prefer to mate with the reddest male they can find, perhaps assuring that they get a capable male who can find enough food to feed the nestlings.

When nestling House Finches defecate, the feces are contained in a membranous sac, as in most birds. The parents eat the fecal sacs of the nestlings for about the first five days. In most songbird species, when the parents stop eating the sacs, they carry the sacs away and dispose of them. But House Finch parents do not remove them, and the sacs accumulate around the rim of the nest.

Hello Mario,

She looks very deep in thought, very aloof!
You have captured her with lovely sharp detail! I like the way the twig is pointing towards the camera; it gives the shot a very 3D effect!
Interestingt notes!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Salut Mario,

Claudine

Hello Mario,
Superb sharp capture of a female House Finch with great feather details. The use of flash has helped to highlight the bird against the Bg without causing the 'night-time' effect.
Excellent composition on the twig too.
Well done and TFS!

Hi Mario

The quality of your picture is getting better and better everyday, my friend!
And here is a perfectly good example - even though the female is not so beautifully colored as the male, you managed to put is in such a good light and capture it in such lovely surroundings that she is now equaly beautiful.
Your picture is wonderful, benefitting from a terrific composition and from the sharpest of details.
The pose you caught her in is also gret and i would also like to say that the colorfull blurred leaves in the BG add a lot to the visual pleasure of the scene.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hello Mario

Another superbly focused image.
The plumage detail is sharp and well defined.
The colours are natural and vivid. The patterns and textures are excellent.
Well composed in the frame,in a natural setting.
Very good use of light, the eye has lovely catch light.
I like the OOF BG with some autumn colours too,a nice accent for the shot.
Great camera work.

Boy, I can hardly keep up with all your posts. I couldn't get that many great shots in a row of birds if I had all year to do it. I am stunned. The natural framing and colors along with the super sharpness and wonderful background makes this another winner. I am jealous of your obvious talent and skill at this.

Hi Mario . Just a short quick note to say good shot, running late sorry.
Nick..

Salut Mario,

Claude
