Golden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise

Maple trees are so common the world over, that there is not much I can offer that you have not heard (or read) before. For us in Canada, it has additional significance because it is a popular national symbol, and in its red autumnal guise is represented in stylised form on the national flag.

Instead, I would like to address the question of why leaves change colour as the trees prepare for their winter slumber.

The chlorophyll production that keeps the leaves of this tree green all sumer ceases as the tree senses the cold and builds a corky layer between the branch and the leaf, a membrane that will eventually cause the leaf to fall off.
This allows the other colours that were hidden by the chlorophyll to emerge: the carotene that absorbs blue-green and blue light (and thus appears yellow) and the anthocyanins which absorb blue, blue-green, and green light and thus reflect red.

The range and intensity of autumn colours is influenced by the weather. The combination of low (but above-freezing) temperatures and bright sunshine promote the production of anthocyanins. Moreover, dry weather increases the concentration of sugar in the sap. And, the more acidic and sweeter the sap, the brighter the red. So the brightest autumn colours are produced when the nights are cool and dry and the days are sunny and dry.

It is as smooth as Silke! Seriously there is a soft and wonderful feel to this fall shot. Very nice. It doesn't work well with all shots but better than any in this shot..

These maple leaves are just beautiful. The lighting is fantastic. Beautiful colors and sharp details. The blurred background is superb. A winner for sure.

HI Silke,
Not surprised to see your name on this photo! I was looking at trees outside today & wondering how in the world one would take a very clear photo of leaves. And up pops your lovely photo! You definitely have an artistic touch with photos of leaves!

Hello Silke,
Our maples have not managed this rich colour that you show here i this fine bit of photography against the light.
Great idea to think of slumber (for the winter) and a nice recall of the lullaby and the Beatles. Photography is poetry as well as science.

This is very beautiful!! A well thought-out composition in striking colours and I love the contrast between the large bright orange leaves in the foreground and the distant leaves still in green. I like your frame too!

Another lovely autumn shot. Great color and crispy clean (which is cool since the leaves would be crisp, the air would be crisp and the photo is crisp. ha ha)

Hi Silke,
Very well done!
One of the best, from my viewpoint, fall color leaf closeups I've seen here. I've tried for somthing like this but you succeeded. The composition, focus, color and DOF are all super.
I like the framing and title.
Have you considered marketing these as cards?
Interesting note TFS
Richard...see you later

Hello Silke,
