sapsucker on lilac bush
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This yellow-bellied sapsucker was flitting through my lilac bushes, drilling oval holes and drinking the sap. I chased him down, finally, as he would not stay still! Might see one of these a year, so this was an event. Hazy afternoon.
This is an Eastern race Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker. Length is 7 to 8 1/2 inches. Long white wing stripe, black, white and red pattern on head and neck. Sapsuckers have brushlike tongues and do not extract insects from a tree. Instead they drill rows of holes, remove the inner bark, then eat the sap that runs out, as well as any insects trapped in it. |
