Today I needed help to get out of a situation when I was out at the Cypress Hills and got it. Now I need your help, not quite as serious a problem, but a problem just the same. This image shows a beautiful White-tail Doe that I saw at this open water near Ressor Lake. This area has several pools of open water. It is a marshy area that attracts all sorts of wildlife, who come to drink the water. These pools are half a meter deep (1.5 feet), the water is cold but the only time I have seen it freeze right over is when it is about -35 to -40C. Why would this water not freeze? Thanks for any insight that you can give. Oh yeah that situation I got into today, I got stuck in my 4X4 to the point I had to crawl out the window and after a bunch of shovelling was just slipping sided ways deeper into trouble. I was about to walk for help (6 kilometers) when three young men came along and helped dig and pull me out, then they refused to take anything for the help. I have a heart condition that causes me to not normally shovel snow, so thier kindness was just greatly appreciated. This old fart has to be more cautious and pay attention to the trail rather than whats in the woods.

Hi Rick,
sounds like you've had a bit of a day of it, glad to hear some human kindness helped you out in the end though!
This is a great shot of this White Tail, nicely composed, good eye contact and excellent exposure. As always, it's nice to see a bit of the surrounding environment too, very well done.

Can't help you with freezing water... I'm a translplanted California girl. If it isn't steaming and not running fast I'm sure I don't know. Lucy just needs to get better. That is what wives are for: to yell at husbands BEFORE they get into trouble... so we don't have to yell twice as much AFTER they get into
trouble.

I like your curious deer. She just wanted to check out the commotion so she could tell the girls about that silly human who can't keep his eyes off of her and stay on the road.

She looks like she is sniffin ya Rick...I'll bet thats just what shes doing. Just a little tuck in the nasal area bunched up..and held up just a bit. Great image. Popped it right at the right time..did you ever wonder what it would be like to have a Nikon D2X that pro sports photographer use...they have continuous High Full image - 5 fps... I had an Olympus that shot 1.5mp at 15fps with high quality lens...great for sports...the Nikon would capture 10-12 mp tho...get out your wallet and all your cards...

Hi Rick,
She is locked on to your here. Nice shot with good clarity and detail. I am guessing since it is not running water, it might possibly be somewhat heated by an underground source. IF not thermal(like Yellowstone) possibly some type of organic decay that causes heat buildup. Very interesting. I would like to know the answer if you ever find out.

Hello Rick

A lovely shot of this beauty. You captured that curious look superbly.
The natural setting and the colours make a beautiful composition.
Very good POV.
I saw one of these girls up close the other night in my vehicle too, last second evasive action on a busy highway avoided calamity thank goodness.
They are as plentiful as rabbits in these parts.A local policeman said that there are three collisions a night in this detachment.
You were about to walk the six Km,your guardian angel was looking over you today.

Hello Rick,
Nice capture of a White-tail Doe in an alert pose. It's a fine sharp image that looks like it was worth the trouble you experienced in getting it. My wife is usually with me to prevent me driving on the wrong side of the road when I see things!
I can't think of a satisfactory explanation as to why the water does not freeze, but it can depend on either disolved salts, currents or constant disturbanceby animals coming down to drink.
Hope you recovered well from your ordeal!

Hi Rick,

I think you should move down here to Arizona where you wouldn't get stuck in the snow! A beautiful shot of this doe who has her eyes right on you. I love the lift of her head. Wonderful setting - looks cold.

Hi Rick, you make me laugh and smile! These adventures you live go so well with the temerity you seem to have to take pictures, I tip my hat to you! I don't know where, but I read the story of a woman photographer travelling around the world all the time and to whom everything would happen: but she wouldn't give up. And to our pleasure, you bring back great pictures like this one, I love the curiosity and the nose up in the air of this beautiful deer. she is sniffing and listening and watching you with all her animal intensity and acuteness. Super shot. As for the water, I have been thinking and found nothing and thought of asking my Love... who works at Aqueduc Services at the City of Montreal. He told me that water, even a very thin stream, doesn't freeze if it is flowing like the water on the picture, it is flowing and moving. Hope that helps you! It's your day!
