Hi all todays' posting is from this May and was taken at Cameron Lake. This is a Yellow-rumped Warbler and this was the first one I have ever seen, boy are they tiny. He is captured sitting on the branch of a spruce tree.

Three closely related North American bird forms—the eastern Myrtle Warbler, its western counterpart, Audubon's Warbler, and the Central American Goldman's Warbler—are periodically lumped as the Yellow-rumped Warbler (Dendroica coronata).

Since 1973, American Ornithological Union has elected to merge these passerine birds as one species. These two forms were apparently separated by glaciation during the last ice age, and developed distinguishing physical characteristics. When it was shown however that they were able to interbreed, they no longer qualified to be considered as separate species. The reluctance of some North American birdwatchers to accept A.O.U.'s change in speciation may stem from the changes in their "life lists". Technically, what before may have justifiably counted for two entries should perhaps now be cut back to one.

The Yellow-rumped Warbler breeds from eastern North America west to the Pacific, and southward from there into parts of Mexico. It is a migratory bird which travels to Central America and the Caribbean for winters. Among warblers it is one of the last to leave North America in the fall, and among the first to return. It is an occasional vagrant to the British Isles and Iceland.

In summers, males of both forms have streaked backs of black on slate blue, white wing patches, a streaked breast, and conspicuous yellow patches on the crown, flank, and rump. Audubon's Warbler also sports a yellow throat patch, while the Myrtle Warbler has a white throat and eye stripe, and a contrasting black cheek patch. Females of both forms are more dull, with brown streaking front and back, but still have noticeable yellow rumps. Goldman's Warbler, of Guatemala, resembles Audubon's but has a white lower border to the yellow throat and otherwise darker plumage; males replace the slate blue of Audubon's with black.

These birds are primarily insectivorous, although when bugs are scarce, the Myrtle Warbler also enjoys eating the wax-myrtle berries which gave it its name. They often flit, flycatcher-like, out from their perches in short loops, in search of insects.

They nest in coniferous and mixed woodlands, and lay 4-5 eggs in a cup-shaped nest.

The Yellow-rumped has a trill-like song of 4-7 syllables (tyew-tyew-tyew-tyew,tew-tew-tew) and an occasional check or chip call note

Hi Rick, I'm finally back at TN after the departure of my friend yesterday who stayed here for several days. I missed a lot of postings and hope to catch up! This is a real nice picture of a beautiful little birds, I love warblers but most of the time I find it hard to identify them. This shot is beautiful, the background is blurred and smooth, the bird stands out on these nice branches. Thank you and happy new year to you!

There have been times when you have expressed interest in my wilderness and it's experience...indirectly perhaps but as in a wanting way which I am familiar with. But this photo was not taken on 10 feet of your home, nor in a bird santuary...or a cage God forbid...but in a Province of Canada which is perhaps one of the most remote of the ones which border the US at 49 degrees N. And in that, it gives me pause to think aboubt the passive and quiet atmosphere in which you now live and are so familiar with.
This bird is at home...and you are at home..and you should never consider leaving this unless it be for some other reason perhaps financial...because it is such a beautiful place full and rich with nature and the life which many now are forgetting exist...In this respect you are in a given place in which to take good images as this and share them with the whole world..It is a grand scheme beyond our thoughts...and you are an important part of it...All of this shows..in this seemingly simple picture....

I gather this was a rather difficult shot to get. Obviously with the bird being so small, accessibility, lighting conditions, etc., but seeing something like this for the first time (especially in its natural environment) and being able to capture it always gets the adrenaline flowing and the reward for accomplishment is just that much sweeter. Isn't it?

I like the POV with the bird looking over its shoulder and making eye contact. You pushed the aperture and shutter speed to get some lovely sharp details from the DOF, but it also rendered the shot a little bit on the dark side. No big deal though as it is nothing that PP cannot optimise. I've done a quick workshop to show you what I mean. Anyway the colours are great and the BG worked perfectly. A fine image MF.

What a great capture, it is so hard to capture these quick little birds with my Sigma 70-300, the IS lens must be very useful when capturing subjects like this little guy. It just looks like it hasn't been re-sharpened before uploading, I created a workshop just to show the difference it makes when the photo is sharpened before uploading, well captured!

Hi Rick,

Amazing to catch a Yellow-Rumped sitting still out in the open! They always seem to be flitting thru the leaves and never stop. You show him off nicelye with his lovely colors and cute face.

Hi Rick.
I like very nice scene presented by this picture. The pine-tree branches (sharp and blurred) create an amazing frame for your cute character. Details of the bird. Its coloration are so attractive as well as the neutral BG which supplements the pictorial subject very well. Image is not crisp sharp but this is not a point for this pleasant scene. My best wishes and compliments.
