Mountain Bluebird
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Aves

Order: Passeriformes

Family: Turdidae

Genus: Sialia

Species: S. currucoides

Range
The Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides) is a medium-sized thrush.

Adults have thin bills. Adult males are bright blue, somewhat lighter underneath. Adult females have duller blue wings and tail and a grey breast, grey crown, throat and back.

Their breeding habitat is open country across western North America, including mountain areas, as far north as Alaska. They nest in cavities or in nest boxes. In remote areas, these birds are less affected by competition for natural nesting locations than the other bluebirds.

Northern birds migrate to the southern parts of the range; southern birds are often permanent residents. Some birds may move to lower elevations in winter.

These birds hover over the ground and fly down to catch insects, also flies from perch to catching them. They mainly eat insects and berries. They may forage in flocks in winter.

This is the state bird of Idaho and Nevada.

Paul

It is a beautiflu blue...I once had one...well more than once...and he would sit on this fence post at the bottom of the primitive road. He was there every day...and I never took a picture...seems as though when I got within 200 feet of him he flew off....and then when I would come back, he would be there again...but to see them is even better than images..a remarkably wonderful bird..GREAT image Rick...You lucky guy!

Beautiful POV and nice frame, I like the bushes where the bird is standing, it is wild and natural. You really live in nature and wilderness and thanks to you to share with us those beautiful sights!

I love the mountain bluebirds. Did you see the one that Luis posted today. I didn't know they traveled into Mexico. Sometimes the blue in the sunlight is so amazing. This is a nice image. He stands out so nicely against the soft greens of the background.
