[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)is carnivorous, and an opportunistic feeder. Its diet is mainly composed of small mammals, but it also includes birds and reptiles. Prey varies with regional and seasonal availability, but usually includes cottontails, rodents, pheasants and quail. It may also prey on waterfowl, bats, shrews, snakes, lizards, crustaceans, insects, and when near the waters edge, carp and catfish. The Red-tailed Hawk hunts primarily from an elevated perch site. It will swoop down from a perch to seize prey, catching birds while flying, or pursuing prey on the ground from a low flight.

Prey taken can range in size from beetles to White-tailed Jackrabbits, which are double the weight of most Red-tails. In captivity in winter, an average redtail will eat about 135 g (4-5 oz) daily. The Great Horned Owl occupies a similar ecological niche nocturnally, taking similar prey. Competition may occur between the Red-tailed Hawk and the Great Horned Owl during twilight.

Hi Doug,
some timing! Excellent shot of these two buteos. I like the branch in the background, however you might consider blurring the background somewhat, to put more emphasis on the two birds.
Cheers,
Jacob

Hi Doug.
What an interesting scene you managed to catch. Composition of the image is perfect. I like wonderful impressive light and colours. Despite the dynamic scene you have got excellently sharpened image. Bravo.
Alexei.

hello Doug

superb timing to do this shot with one of the hawk

This is a great action shot Doug. It is always nice to get more than one animal in a shot. It would have been truly spectacular if that busy tree weren't right behind the action. There is just so much luck involved with wildlife photography. I'm not good at it. Technically the image looks good.

What a marvellous capture, Doug!!
How beautiful these Red-tailed Hawks! I love the details on the eyes and the plumage. How well that you captured one of them just landing in such a fantastic pose!
Congratulations and thank you very much for sharing.
Best regards

Hi Doug,
You are lucky to see so many birds of prey! I would love to have those opportunities but I don't see them often. This is an excellent capture and you got two at the same time! You managed to catch great catch-light in their eyes, both of them, congrats!

Hi Doug

Lovely action shot - with very good eye contact in both birds. Well timed and captured.

James

Hello Doug,
Thanks for your kind critique on my picture of birds sunning themselves on a sandbar in the river Yamuna which flows through New Delhi, India.
Unfortunately, I do not have enough hardware to shoot subjects from a distance. I couldn't get close because between me and the birds, there was this wide stretch of stinking, highly polluted water and wading through it would have been risky.

Coming to your picture, this is a wonderful capture of two Hawks crowding on to a branch. The first one is just about settled and the one to the right of the frame is in the process of doing so. A great action shot, indeed.
Thanks for sharing this nice image and best regards.
