Rocky Mountain Bighorn
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
“Big Horn “is the name of this photo which was taken on a trip to Alberta this summer.
Some information about these wonderful creatures follows:
Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep
(Ovis canadensis canadensis)
The Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep are the most numerous and the most widespread bighorn race. Their numbers are between 31,500 and 34,500. They can be found in Alberta, British Columbia, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota, Washington and Wyoming.
In the early 1900's bighorn sheep in North America were estimated to number between 1.5 and 2 million. Bighorn populations were devastated by hunting, diseases introduced by domestic livestock and competition from grazing livestock. Habitat loss and fragmentation are now recognized as the most serious threats to the survival of the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. If this magnificent animal is to be preserved for generations to come, its habitat must be preserved as well. |
