This Sharp-tailed Grouse is trying to attract a mate, they stamp their feet very quickly, raise their tail, hold their wings out and inflate an air sac on their neck. All this to try to get a girl. Now for the funny part who he is trying to impress with all of this is my old 86 Dodge Travel Van which when in reverse has an audible outside beeper, you see I was shooting this grouse from the van and I had to back up when the beeper went off so did he. This was the first time it ever happened and Lucy and I couldn't stop laughing. Since this love episode the van has got the same reaction from two Spruce Grouse and a Ruffed Grouse so we have a nick name for the old van LOVE BOAT.

Hallo Rick
Thanks for sharing this amusing and adorable photo of the Sharp-tailed Grouse with us. Looking at this pose of the Grouse, in my mind’s eye I saw a Can-Can girl doing her dancing, showing of her frilly bloomers. This bird has lovely feathers. I like the white spots on it, and the furry legs. A delightful image and as always lovely to look at.
Kind regards
Anna

Hi Rick

An amusing account and great shot of the mating display. Good detail and eye contact - from the reverse!

For some odd reason I had totally forgotten about this activity..but it happens quite often. I have not seen it happen but have been close by...once you have heard the noise, it is one you can not forget right Rick? I'm sure you know...A very nice and somewhat rare capture!

with an excellent POV to show us his dance,

here in Montréal area
(Montréal, Laurentians, Lanaudières, Montérégie)
with don't have the Sharp-tailed Grouse, but i kno that
in western Québec (Outaouais, Abitibi) they have

we have the ruffed grouse, last spring i did to many
photos of the wood ducks, for this spring i decide
to go and try to do photos of the ruffed grouse,
i would like to do one when the grouse is drumming

Hello Rick,
Excellent capture of a displaying Sharp-tailed Grouse taken with good sharpness that makes it stand out from the dry grassy BG and from a fine POV. It reminds me a little of our Black Grouse with the same stance and tail display.
Well done and thanks for sharing this fine image.
Ivan

I predicted your note when I saw the thumbnail, as you had related that hilarious story to me a while back. Maybe Dodge could borrow your truck for an ad about never being too old for love, or their trucks are always young at heart, or their trucks are never too old to dream, or their trucks keep on running like a spring chicken or something...

It's great post.

Hi Rick,

I love it!!! The picture and notes are both excellent - and amusing. Never knew a Van could be a love boat. Great pose as she shows it all. Wonderful details of the feathers with their markings. Wonder what you will come up with next.

Hi Rick,
great shot showing the unusual behaviour of Grouses... Grise... Grousi... what's the plural of Grouse?!
Very funny story! I wonder why the Grouse was attracted to your van! :-)
Great earthy colours and nice natural lighting.
Sharp with great detail and clarity.
Well done my friend,
Joe

Hi Rick, are you sure it's the van having the effect???? ;-)) This is quite a funny story and I love the pose of the grouse, with its little buns up in the air, so cute. Lovely picture as usual, with natural colours and beauty. Thanks!
