[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
We met this ruffed grouse male and its three females while going up the champ-de- mars.The male was kind enough to display its ruff or neck feathers and fanning its tail.He used this parade,with drumming, to defend its territory against the other males and to attract females to its territory.They do not migrate, and live in solitary in a few hectares that the male do not leave.The female occupies a larger territory.
They live in deciduous and mixed forest where they feed on catkins and buds from poplars,birch hop hornbean and alders in winter.In summer,they will eat flowers,soft leaves, berries and seeds and mushroom.
Breeding is in spring,the female builds a nest with twigs and feathers in a shallow bowl where she will lay 7 to 12 eggs.for 21 days.The female will defend its young by distracting attention by hissing,clucking and dragging one wing as if it was broken.Try to catch her and she burst into the air.
They can travel OVER the snow with the help of their snowshoes(lateral extensions of the scale of the toes)which you can see clearly on this photo.
The scientific name is Bonasa(good when roasted)Umbellus(sunshade).

Hi Charles

I like this shot, especially the fan shape of the tail, but the front has blended with the back and therefore can not see the head of the bird due to the darkness. Unfortunate event but the shot has good detail.
