Taking picture is like freezing a moment in time and space... just a play on words here, I call this picture Frozen Moment as it is very cold out and this little female Common Redpoll seems "frozen" in time and space too.

In fact, right now it is beautiful and sunny outside. The February sun is shining on a blue sky and the birds are eating in frenzy at the feeders. Since we put peanut butter suet with nuts and cranberries in it, the starlings fled to the apple tree like a teenager gang over a bottle of Jack Daniels ;-)) They always come paired with the Blue Jays, I guess that likes attract likes.

If you watch carefully, you can see the Common Redpolls feeding at the same time as chickadees, dark-eyed juncos, pine siskins when they are still around, all the smaller birds.

Then, the starlings get into the picture with their flapping flight and here follow the blue jays and the doves, the bigger birds. Even though the doves are supposedly peaceful birds, I have noticed more than once that they scare the blue jays if they approach their territory. I guess it's a matter of who's the biggest.

Shortly, the American Robin will be back, preceding the many sparrows and the dark-eyed juncos that fled south, followed by all the other nesting birds coming back to us. At that time of the year, there are so many juncos in "heat", their trills fill the air like a loud buzzing sound, it's incredible. Their sounds takes over any other sound because it is loud and there are many hundreds of juncos around the backyard in the trees. It's an experiment to live and I had never witnessed such a phenomenon except for frogs at spring!

This little Redpoll is sitting by itself but it really is a "frozen moment" because life doesn't stand still, never. These birds are very rarely on their own too as they go around in flocks and soon, they will be many hundreds to come at the feeders $$$$ lots of seeds to feed them!

Hope you enjoy,

Francine

Hallo Francine
Wonderful colours, excellent sharpness and splendid details. What a beautiful shot of this little Redpoll. It seems like a shy little bird. I often wonder how the animals and birds cope in the cold weather and how do they keep themselves warm. I also wonder if they also experience the cold in the same way we as humans do. I know it is all part of nature but I still wonder about these things. This one looks very cold and sleepy. Lovely presentation. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hi Francine,

This little Redpoll looks very cold and only half awake. Beautiful shot with lovely colors and good details. It amazes me how they get thru those cold winters. Here in Arizona, the birds get all puffed up and seek shelter when it falls below 60F and there is a breeze.

Jane

Hey Francine,
another reason why the name Frozen Moment suits the pic is the fact that even the fur on the bird is a little spiked, which sometimes signifies feeling cold and is the same for us humans as well. So even though it may not be cold there...but it sure does look like so.

Great shot.

Hello Francine
This is just fantastic...reminds me somehow of someone nodding off whilst watching the TV!!
The sharpness is to die for as are the colours..the bg highlights this so well.
It really is a fantastic scene.
Tfs and a very good Sunday to you

Hi Francine,

Wondering how in the world you got the angle you did with the exceptional lighting...that is terrific use of available light to highlight areas not normally done. Very nice and most thoughtful expressive notes to accompany!

Gorgeous shot of this little Redpoll.
It looks very contented somehow :-)
Great composition placing the subject in the top-right quarter.
The DOF is perfect and blurs the BG very well.
Nice colours and lovely lighting which is very unusual seeing as it's coming from below rather than above. Presumably because the sun's light is being reflected back up by the snow. Unless you have a garden light or something :-)
Impeccable image quality.
Excellent notes.
Very well done Francine,
Joe

Hello Francine,

Wonderful perspective in this composition. Thanks for sharing this beautiful shot.

The small branch which the bird sits on balances well with the tree trunk on the right. The light is good exposing the vividness of this beautiful colors and plumage. The perch is perfect and simply wonderful against the blurry blue background. Excellent composition and very well done.

Jusni
