NORTHEN CARDINAL

The Northern Cardinal or "Redbird" is probably one of most popular visitors to backyard bird feeders. Its range extends over most of the eastern USA, parts of extreme southeastern Canada, and south through Mexico to Belize. It has also been introduced to Hawaii. Its variable call, a loud "cheer cheer cheer" or "purty purty purty," is sung by both sexes and can be heard year round. Cardinals are nonmigratory, but some movement does occur in the later summer and fall.

Description

Medium-sized songbird.
Large crest on head.
Heavy, conical red bill.
Face surrounded by black.
Male entirely brilliant red.
Female grayish-tan with red tail and wings.

Size: 21-23 cm (8-9 in)
Wingspan: 25-31 cm (10-12 in)
Weight: 42-48 g (1.48-1.69 ounces)

Even though Northern Cardinal nests are frequently parasitized by Cowbirds, their populations are increasing, and their range is expanding northward and westward. There can be little doubt that the popularity of backyard bird feeding is contributing to the population and range increases of this species.

Hallo Lise
Beautiful portrait. Very good capture of this photogenic bird. The details and colours are sharp and clear in this close-up. I just love the big black eye and the combination of bright colours of the plumage. I would love to get a shot like this, of any bird, as long as it is so closely. Very well framed and presented. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

I see he was eating out of the snow...Snow and Cardinals...they go together well even if only a small piece of white. Not sure why this is..and not sure how the connection came between birds and heads of the Mother church!? A great close in shot Lise!
