[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This Mule deer buck and his growing antlers were capture at Waterton near Driftwood Bay. The blood rich velvet feeds the rapid growth of the new antlers until late August when it dies and the bucks start rubbing it off in time for the rut.

Antler
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antlers are the large and complex horn-like appendages of male deer and of both sexes of other related species such as caribou. They consist of bony outgrowths from the head with no covering of keratin as is found in true horns. Each antler grows from an attachment point on the skull called a pedicle. While an antler is growing it is covered with highly vascular skin called velvet, which supplies oxygen and nutrients to the growing bone; once the antler has achieved its proper size, the velvet is lost and the antler's bone dies. This dead bone structure is the mature antler. Antlers shed after each mating season.

Hi Rick,
We are far from spring right now but its normal... we live in Quebec with snow precipitations records. I’m not surprised :)

Your picture is a beauty! He is changing status and this is a beautiful moment to witness! :-) It seems dolorous though… :) Thanks for having posting it!
Claudine

Hi Rick,

What a beautiful horns of this wonderful mule deer:)! Excelent capture, nice details and great composition. However I have to be honest:) I loved especially its horns :D . Lovely indeed.
Cheers,

Bayram

Thank you for sharing the documentary pic of the skin-horned mule deer. As a posrtait it is very successfull but the impressive dominance of thicker than normal antkers look bizarre, so i think a little more space would be better that side...

Hi Rick.
What a sweet portrait of the beautiful deer. I like soft (art) sharpness of the image, perfect details and natural colours and light. BG in its some blurriness and great part of your work. It is suitable for main subject excellently. Cropping is very good too. However the key point is reflection of the animal mood. Bravo.

Hello Rick,
Very nice portrait of a Mule Deer buck in velvet. You kept this fine one hidden from us for quite some time! It is almost perfect, the sharpness, DOF, composition, POV, every aspect is great.
Thanks for sharing this one, Rick and have a good weekend,
Ivan

Lovely image Rick, seeing the deer in velvet reminds me of when I lived in Scotland...just waiting for the flies to terrorise the deer when they shed.....excellent portrait, great lighting and a nice pose...fine work!!!

Hi Rick,

How proud be looks of his new antlers! They look like velvet. Beautiful portrait with fine details and wonderful colors. The grass is a perfect background.

The Mule Deer are getting harder and harder to find up in the wilderness..this has been happening for the last 4-5 years as I recall and nobody seems to know why them and not the white tail as well..both have predators in cougar and coyote as well as wild dog...but the white is sticking it out...Muleys are a nice capture for you Rick. Well done!
