This small fellow is a regular visitor and he enjoys the suet I give him as you can see on his beak. We have this never ending winter this year and I think that birds need all the food they can find to pass through this rough period.

“The smallest and most common American woodpecker, the Downy Woodpecker is found throughout most of North America from Alaska to Florida. It lives in a variety of habitats from wilderness forests to urban backyards, and comes readily to bird feeders.

Description
• Small woodpecker.
• Black and white plumage.
• Plain white back.
• Small, pointed bill.
• Size: 14-17 cm (6-7 in)
• Wingspan: 25-30 cm (10-12 in)
• Weight: 21-28 g (0.74-0.99 ounces)”

You have the nicest visitors!! Unusual to see a shot of a Woodpecker not on a tree. This pose is wonderful. Excellent colors and details of the face, wings and plummage.

Hello Claudine, this is a pretty fellow. Yes, I see the suet on his beak, and it is good that you do feed the birds - I've heard of your wintertime up there. (I've seen some great TL photos of the snow) Our summer has been quite glorious and is still going on - so we aren't complaining, except for the areas that desperately need rain.
His colours stand out well, and I love his pose,
TFS
Janice

Hi Claudine,
So good you can help the birds to go through by the long winter there.
I like a lot the way you filled the frame with the bird and the curved branch.
It's so enjoyable the close approach and rich details you bring.
In my monitor the background also looks fine, I mean, white as it was.
Congratulations and thanks for share.
Warm regards,
JM

Bien vu Claudine, merci!

Francine

Hi Claudine

Nice camera work here. What a cute model. Love the snow on the beak. Well done! :-)

Bonjour Claudine,

Hello Claudine,
The POV of this capture of a Downey Woodpecker makes the image extra interesting because of the sharp view of the feet and the long claws necessary for it to grip tree trunks. The composition, light management and colours are also excellent.
Thanks for sharing this fine image,
Best wishes, Ivan

If you didn't tell it was suet on the beak, I'd think it snow to go along with the snowy white BG :)
Flash exposure looks good, nice color and sharp details with great DOF.
