This mated pair of Canada Geese are marching in unison while patrolling the ice in full view of an American Widgeon. This is a shallow bay on Murray Lake near Medicine Hat.
The spectacle of Canada Geese migrating in long, honking, irregular “V” formations across spring or autumn skies is always thrilling. It is one of the most dramatic portents of the change of seasons in Canada. Flying in diagonal lines or “V” formations serves at least two purposes. The most important is that it helps the geese save energy and permits them to fly longer distances. Scientists believe that Canada Geese fly in a “V” because of the “drafting” effect, where the follower goose, like a cyclist in a race, benefits from the air currents passing the leader, and thus expends less energy flying. A secondary function of the formation is to coordinate the flock’s movements, allowing changes in flight speed or direction to be communicated quickly and efficiently to all members of the flock.

Hello Rick,

Slippery! Here in Arizona is already getting hot, very nice capture of this pair, just today I saw a flock of Canada Geese enjoying the sun.. Have a nice day :)

Everton

It certainly is a regimented shot...sort of what I would expect of an officer and a gentlemen both in nature and the one recording it! You are the guy to follow in a land so near yet so far...very nicely composed both in composition and in image/notes.

Some of our Canadian Geese already have little fluffy yellow chicks following them around. I know what you mean about seeing the geese arriving in spring or departing fall. I once, in all innocence said, "It just gives you goosebumps to see them coming, wave after wave." It gave us all a good laugh. Maybe that is the origin of the expression. About when do you expect a final thaw? I can't imagine ducks eating without water.

Thanks for sharing this marching duo.

Hello Rick,
Always a wonderful spectacle to see these gorgeous geese in their fling V pattern. I like the fact that you got these two lovers at the ice rink. Very nice and TFS. :)

Ha ha! Funny shot of these marching Geese!
I don't know how birds seem to always be able to grip on the ice! I once saw a Heron landing on an iced-over lake and it skidded for a couple of metres but even that gangly bird didn't slip! Us Humans get on the ice and WOosh! we're flat on our backs... usually anyway :-)
Very sharp shot!
The detail is great and we can even see frozen bubbles on the surface.
Excellent DOF and focusing.
I like the little spectator in the BG.
Well done Rick!
Cheers,
Joe

Hi Rick, now i know...always wondered about the 'V' formation thing - thanks!
Anyway, a fine shot of these two patrolling their patch, with great timing to catch the two pairs of feet in unison here. Like the icey setting too, won;t be long until it's all green i guess??

Hi Rick,

You have a wonderful eye to notice the position of the feet of the two geese. They look like they are putting on a show between periods of a hockey game. Great shot with wonderful colors and details. This is something different.

So they're coming up north, Rick! Nice bright picture, here, with great exposure and lots of details. I always found those geese very funny when walking and you depicted it very well in this picture. Thank you!

Francine

hello Rick

what a funny shot of these Canada Geese and the
American Widgeon on ice with a great POV and composition

and between Canadians i can do a joke, the 2 Canada Geese are
the BIG and tough North American left wing & right wing players
and the American Widgeon is their fancy Europeen center player,
as you guess i am talking about our National Sport in Canada,
