Hi all , did not get much sunlight after work today , but enough :-) .
todays upload is one of two birds , either a downy woodpecker , or a hairy woodpecker , I am not certain which, since the plumage on the two birds is nearly identical the only way I could tell is by guessing it's size ,not one of my strong points...
well either way they peck trees and eat sap and insects :-) , it is interesting to note though that although the two birds are nearly identical aside from a few inches or so , that they are considered to be closely related to each other , their similar appearance is considered an example of convergent evolution. I tend to think that it is a hairy woodpecker , cause it was a bit larger , and pecking at the trunk of the tree , where downy wood peckers tend towards the branches. the Hairy woodpecker also likes to scavenge in the larger holes left behind by the pileated wood pecker , picking out the insects the larger bird left behind. I sure would like to get a 'this year' photo of a pileated woodpecker , they are far less common here...
well that is all I got for today.
raw conversion done in adobe elements 6 , cropping and resizing in Faststone Image Viewer.
