This past saturday, I went to Mirabel to find out that all the owls were gone. To my surprise, I saw a group of gray oartidges walking in the field. I , carefully, hide myself behind a barn waiting and hoping they would come closer. Good enough, I was able to take a few shots of this one and as soon as they heard the clic of my camera, they ran away!

Lise
The gray partridge, also known as the Hungarian partridge, is a small chicken-like bird. It has gray neck and chest feathers and a rusty red head. Its wing and tail feathers are brown, rust, white and gray. It has short, round wings and a small bill. Males often have a dark brown U-shaped patch on their stomach. Females may have a smaller patch or no patch at all.

The gray partridge is a non-native species in North America. It is originally from Europe and Asia. It was introduced to North America as a game bird and is now found in British Columbia and in parts of south central Canada. It is also found in the north central United States.

The gray partridge lives in open areas, farmland, grasslands and brush.

Most of the gray partridge's diet is made up of grains. It also occasionally eats insects.

The female gray partridge lays between eight and ten eggs in a shallow depression lined with grass. The eggs take a little over three weeks to incubate. The chicks begin to fly when they are about two weeks old.

Gray partridges are non-territorial during the non-breeding season and live in large groups or coveys. Males can be aggressive towards each other during mating season. Males and females pair up in the spring for mating.

Even in the thumbnail, that patch of color at the rear end of this bird catches the eye, Lise.
The full image is a sheer joy to look at. It is a very handsome bird which you have shot very well. I like the way its head is turned and one foot is lifted off the ground.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful image.

What a pretty bird, Lise.
I have not seen this one very often.
Like the red splotch on the belly.
The pose with one leg up is very cute.
The snow makes for a clean and natural BG.

Hallo Lise
When I saw this image it reminded me of my school years and the times we wrote exams, with the teacher walking up and down "checking" if we did not smuggle in some notes to crib if we did not know the answers, head and eyes looking in all directions.
A most delightful view of this Partridge. You have managed to capture the details of the feathers with such preciseness and beauty. The markings are just lovely, but what I fancy the most is the rosy coloured markings around the big black eye. This is really a very handsome bird with lots of style and grace. It displays well and is a lovely close-up. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your day.
Kind regards
Anna
