"BLACK-TAILED PRAIRIE DOG". = Cynomys ludovicianus.
Family name: Sciuridae. Length: 28 - 33 cm. Tail 7.5 - 10 cm. Weight 0.90 - 1.40 kg.
This species eat prairie grasses and other prairie plants including cereal crops, alfalfa and corn. It first eats away all the tall plants around its home (burrows) leaving its predators on the ground no place to hide.
And, we, humans think that these "animals" are dumb??? They have been survivors for centuries.
It lives in a "town" of underground burrows on the prairie. With a complex social structure, each town is divided into "wards". Before habitat loss to farming and species reduction, a single town covered several hectares. As the young grow up, the adults dig new burrows at the edge of "THEIR" towns and move to these surburbs leaving the young to the original town.
Now tell me that they are not clever real estate owners!!!
Found only in the United States & Canada.

You are the most interesting and eclectic master of this art form we call photography. You bring to the table the whole plate, not just a portion for the enjoyable but a full dinner...the whole sheeebang...and in that you are as sensitive to nature as you are to all things...

Hello Mario,
They are indeed lovely animals!
This little fellow seems to be healthy and well fed with a well groomed fur coat...
Interesting point of view, a fine composition with sharp fine details!

Hi Mario
As you can tell I love mammals and this is just lovely. You can really see the thick fur here. The colours are lovely as is the sweet pose.
