[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today after cleaning the trailer we went out to Murray Lake near Medicine Hat to see what we could see. Lots of ducks, geese and swans were on the open portions of water. This image is of a male Northern Shoveller. On a bit of a sad note my cousin who lives and farms on the shores of this lake Lost one of her Rottweilers when he chased some geese on to the ice and feel through a drowned. they were in town when it happened or they could have saved him as his brother was frantically trying to get help.

Cool Facts

The bill of the Northern Shoveler is about 6.5 cm (2.5 inches) long. The bill has has about 110 fine projections (called lamellae) along the edges, for straining food from water.

Northern Shoveler pairs are monogamous, and remain together longer than pairs of other dabbling duck species.

When flushed off the nest, a female Northern Shoveler often defecates on its eggs, apparently to deter predators.

Hi Rick,
very nice pic and very useful note! I´m not use to see this kind of ducks down here.
The DOF of the pic is great, also those shocking colours of the duck. Good light also and great details.
Water seems so calm there, a perfect place for swimming!!
Good work!
have a nice day
TFS

Hi Rick,
you have this fellow in a very good light and his colours show up very well in this well focused and detailed shot.Sad about your cousin's dog, that is a tough break and a good warning for us to keep our pets away from icy water like ponds and rivers.Your note is very good as now I know what those projections are named. Thanks for this nice spring time shot. Bob

hello Rick

you did a excellent shot with a fine POV and i love that you
leaved a very good space in front of the duck in the framing,
excellent shrpness and details and i love the reflection on water,

This is one for the wall or perhaps in small sized...but either way....having the duck coming into the picture from left to right is a good seen image from this end...for one reason or another....certain images demand to be picture left to right or vis versa...but this one works in this way so well.

beautiful pic and good composition, TFS Ori

Oh, this is sad for the dog, life is harsh. Yet the picture remains beautiful and sunny and I can see you're back in Alberta. I have never seen this duck before, it is superb, what a head! You captured it with details and its beauty too. I love it once more! I am amazed you have so much wildlife in Alberta, so many species.

Hi Rick,

I feel so sorry for your cousin - it's bad enough when we lose them to old age but something like that is horrible. On a brighter note, this duck which I am not familiar with, is beautiful. Excellent lighting, beautiful colors and sharp details. So many lovely colors on his plummage to go with that gorgeous green head and yellow eye. You even show the water dripping from his mouth. The reflections are a bonus.

Jane
