Soon these two will be battling over the ladies hearts, but right now this pair of Tom Wild Turkeys are friends feeding on the grass in the townsite of Elkwater in the Cypress Hills.

Wild Turkey
Meleagris gallopavo
General Description

By Gustave J. Yaki

Initially a bird of the central and eastern USA states, southern Ontario and Quebec, south into Mexico, which disappeared from its periphery due to excessive hunting and habitat alteration. It has been reintroduced to former areas, with populations thriving under new hunting legislation.

In Alberta at least 398 birds were released in seven general areas of the province, but only two have succeeded. These are in the Cypress Hills and the Porcupine Hills area. A small population exists near Turner Valley, possibly from the Porcupine Hill release. They enter urban areas in winter, taking advantage of food scattered at bird feeders.

Wild Turkeys are omnivorous, eating insects, especially grasshoppers, terrestrial invertebrates, small vertebrates (voles, shrews, etc.) but mostly vegetation, especially in winter. This includes, seeds, grains, leaves, nuts and acorns.

Males are promiscuous. Their loud gobbling attracts receptive hens. She lays her 8-12 eggs in a shallow hollow in open deciduous forest, often near the edge. The incubation period is 28 days. Upon hatching, the hen leads them to the best feeding areas. The young feed themselves, but are brooded and guarded by the female. They can fly at about 14 days and join the hen to roost beside her in the trees. The family remains together until winter.

I used to have so many of these on my property...or lets call it our wilderness home...whatever...lean...that's what they are....too lean...but they do have a tendency to know hen season is open.

Hi Rick.
We also have wild turkeys here, bun not a chance to catch them yet, they are high in the mountains, but Cougars, wild cats, and coyotes keep the population very low.
Great photo Rick they seems to be happy by now.
Saludos

Hi Rick,
nice to see these guys doing what nature and not squeezed into a farm somewhere! I like the almost identical poses you caught here and the bright light is well exposed showing lots of detail. Their markings are actually really nice!

Hello Rick,
It is obvious the wild variety is considerably more fit as compared to the guys bred for the Christmas and Thanksgiving! It is a pleasant composition, and the birds are captured with fine details in the plumage...
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Rick,

These two look so cute together - almost in the same poses. Their plummage is pretty with nice colors and details. Nice to see them in a natural setting.

Hello Rick

What a couple of turkeys.
A wonderful capture of these two,we have had a population explosion in these parts.I have been feeding a flock of about 30 this past winter. They don't fly much but they can certainly out run me in the snow.
Very good POV,the details are sharp and the plumage well defined.
