Black-capped Chickadee
Poecile atricapilla Order PASSERIFORMES - Family PARIDAE
One of the most familiar and beloved birds in northern North America, the Black-capped Chickadee is a frequent visitor to bird feeders. Its apparently cheerful activity throughout the harshest winters has won it the admiration of many people.

Cool Facts

The Black-Capped Chickadee hides seeds and other food items for later recovery. Each item is placed in a different spot and a bird can remember thousands of hiding places.

The chickadee's simple-sounding calls have been found to be extremely complex and language-like. They code information on identity and recognition of other flocks as well as predator alarms and contact calls.

Breeding pairs and nonbreeders join up into flocks outside of the breeding season. Nonbreeders may be members of several flocks, with a different position in the dominance hierarchy of each flock.

Hi Rick,

Very nice capture. These chickadees seem to be our 'tits' and some of these look very alike. Good composition, sharpness and colours.

I'm not sure I have the words......the chickadee is and always has been my favorite, yet I always associate it with my childhood and my father who also share the love of this bird. His, dad's, work was done with the birds in snow....and here....you have added a whole new way of seeing the bird....to me the bird is asking where is the snow? Where are the conifers? On the other hand it also shows a whole new angle and way of looking. I do indeed like the perch. It, too is one of my favorites....This image will make Mario over on tech east side wonder a bit bit:-) and perhaps others as well..it is a fine capture.....I like it much!

Hi Rick,

Nice composition, the contrast between the chickadee and the (quenouille, sorry I don't know this word in english) makes your photo very interesting and unique.
Very well done!

Hello Rick,
An excellent capture of a Black-capped Chickadee and unusual to see it on a bullrush. Very nice lighting with catchlight in the eye and great pose, POV and composition against an OOF bullrush BG.

Hi Rick,

What a pretty little Chickadee. I'd love to see one of these birds. I love the vertical framing and the pose. I don't know what that is that he is resting on but it shows how small he is. Well done on the face, wings and plummage.
