Hi folks, todays upload is an Anglewing butterfly , its common name is a Satyr comma , it's characteristic marking is the silver c mark on its under wing.
after several attempts to get in close to this one I managed to get a few minutes in very close proximity , perhaps I tired it out , I know I was getting there :-) , I took several frames from different POV's , some with the wings opened further , and some tightly closed. I like this one best of them I figure with such a common butterfly, a picture of its colorful wings from the top side is pretty common. this butterfly employs a defensive strategy of camouflage , with its wings closed it clearly resembles a fallen leaf, some times it is quite hard to find one of these in this position particularly at this time of year when brown is the dominant color.
the caterpillar has a black spines on its back , white spines on the side , and greenish white lines with chevron markings.
this post was edited due to misidentification :-*)
my reference source is a sight provide by weaselhead.org called talk about wild life it deals mainly with Alberta wildlife I find it a good reference source for birds and insects.
