[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
For the last four days now here where I live, the weather has been below normal for temperature and the skies dull and leaden.Despite the poor conditions I have been out trying to get photos of whatever wildlife I might encounter as I want to get low light photography done to a presentable quality if possible with the gear I have at my disposal.Today after work I thought that I might try my luck on a local man made lake called Emerson Lake and what I saw on the lake just about took my breath away. The following is a list of what I know I did get to see today and I hope for some sun real soon.I saw:
Redhead Ducks
Common Mergansers
Ruddy Ducks
Mallard Ducks
Bufflehead Ducks
Common Goldeneye Ducks
American Avocets
Lesser Yellowlegs
Franklin's Gulls
Ring-Billed Gulls
Canvasback Ducks
Ring-Necked Duck
Greater Scaups
Northern Pintail Ducks
American Wigeons
Eared Grebes
Horned Grebes
Red-Necked Grebes

There were one or two other species I saw but did not see well enough to indentify. Now you know why I hope for some good sunlight to get photos with.Todays photo is that of an Eared Grebe in it's breeding plumage and I used flash for this photo which is something I do not care to do but the light was so poor at the time.I darken the image a little using Paint.Net and slightly sharpen. For me it is always a thrill to see the wee little grebes in any light as their red eyes fascinate me and I hope they do so for you as well.It is possible that Alberta may be the waterfowl capital of Canada as it sure has a great variety and is the only place I know where the very rare Whooping Cranes nest. I know what it is like having the same down here....and this is cool..the eyes...like in Stephen King Novel! Very good image..You should dedicate it to him that's how good it works!
Bob

What an unusual looking bird! It reminds me of science fiction, but I love the colors - so bright and alluring. I'm also reminded of that old saying too much red and it could be poisin and to touch it would strike you dead - or something of that nature. I love the capture though!

Hello Bob. Amazing color of the eye. So red and the plumage is in excellent texture too. Good shot with the ripple on the surface and thanks for sharing. Jusni

Bob, this is a beautiful duck, the picture is superb and I like the light for the nice colours popping out from the feathers. I like the nice waves on the water and your day was worth it! I hope we will see some pictures of all those species and you are right, I think you have many many species in Alberta that I don't find here. Thanks!

Francine

is showing us wavs of the background at the level
of the bird's head, excellent sharpness and details, TFS

Hi Bob
Wow! I've never seen a Eared Grebe before, he's a gorgeous guy showing off his male plumage. I'm totally impressed with this image. We sure have many interesting birds here in Alberta and right now the migration is in full swing. Nice capture Bob.

Hello Bob

The eye looks like it is illuminated.Excellent POV.
Busy lately just marking the post

Rob

Hello Bob,
An impressive number of visitors indeed!
Maybe some of them use the lake as pitstop on the Northern flyway...
This is a well composed presentation of this special fellow, a good looking bird indeed and I notice the red eye!
Greetings,
Pablo -
