[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hi everybody today I have for you Mr.Canvasback a rather shy and retiring sort of duck.These birds seldom come close to shore so that makes getting good photos of them difficult with any detail unless the lens used is greater than 400mm.From a distance it is easy to mistake this western duck for a Redhead however this duck has red eyes and a white back whereas the Redhead has orange eyes and a light grey coloured back and other difference is in their bills,the Canvasback has a straight line slope to his bill and the Redhead a bit more of of a curve.Canvasback ducks here where I live are less common than the Redheads.This fellow was swimming and diving on the "superman slough" here in High River.PP was done with Paint.Net and the new upload file size of 300k sure helps to bring more detail to the view. Beautiful canvasback. I've seen a few, but it's hard to get a good shot because they are so shy. I love the details - and you're right, they are easy to mistake for a redhead for I did the same thing not too long ago, thinking I had a canvasback. They are beautiful ducks. You have excellent dof here as well as a terrific pov. I love the ripples he leaves in his wake, the exposure, and composition. For a shy duck, you managed a beautiful shot. congrats.

I have never seen a canvasback. Interesting...as true I have not seen a Ruddy either...Only ones I have seen so far here in WA are the mallards and the Red Head...but there is a long period of warmth ahead..Very nice...and I shall pass on your best wishes to my wife...

Hello Bob,
Very fine close capture of this Canvasback, a duck very similar to our Pochard although the beak seems longer, maybe an illusion! Great focus and fine sharp details. The light is beautiful and the colours too.
