Up The Creek

Hi folks , today I have again a photo of the canadian beaver , from the same photo's that yesterdays upload came from. I found him swimming up the river at a strange time of day ,I am some what thinking that perhaps its home may have been flooded...
the reason I was able to get so close to this fellow was that I ran up river and knelt down in the grass , if I stay beneath the grass line of the bank my profile is not seen and the beaver remains above water , I have grown rather convinced that the beavers eye sight is not all that keen.
in this photo it may appear that the eye is open wide to the whites which would indicate fear , but it is not really the case , I am not sure if the beaver has a white to its eye , but I am sure that is not what is showing. the beaver's eye is equipped with a second eyelid known as a nictitating membrane which it sees through while swimming under water , it is the white tissue along the top of its eye. Right now with the river flowing so quickly the beavers will mostly swim above water , it is very hard to see in such sediment filled water , as well it is considerably more drag against their body when submerged. just the fact that this beaver can manage to swim upriver right now is testament to how powerful a swimmer it is , this river would be very dangerous to a human at this time of year , someone trying to swim with this fellow would be quite 'up the creek' :-)
thanks for stopping in , hope that you like it
Regards

Hi Art,
very good close up, sharp and lots of details.
Maybe a little more space because the hair by his beak are cut of.

Hi Art, I don't think I've ever seen one quite this close. Very nice positioning and work on your part. With this shot you have incredible detail seen on that face, including the eye with that nictitating membrane. Very nice.
Thanks, John

Hi Art, as well as showing the nictitating membrane in the beaver's eye, you also show the catch-light from the sky behind you. It is good to have them when photographing the eyes.
You are so close - it's a great shot of the beaver.
Well done
Janice
