Hello All,

Here is a picture of an American Robin right after its first-ever flight. It almost ended in a disaster... well here is the story.
The parents decided to build their nest in a tree that grows in a shallow pond. I am sure there are benefits to that as it might keep some predators away but it also has its inherent challenges - the youngsters MUST get their first flight just right or otherwise its game over. When I went by this nest on the previous day, there were two youngsters in it. The next day, the nest was empty and this guy was about 15 feet from the nest, sitting on this lonely branch in the middle of the pond. This little guy looked terrified. He'd occasionally call for mom and dad to bring him food but otherwise kept a low profile - didn't move or do anything that would give away his position.
I took this picture from a wooden walkway that ran right beside the nest. I didn't want to come any closer than I had to just in case I'd scare him and make him jump into the water. That would not be a good thing. So I fired off a few shots and left him for his parents to take care of him. Honestly though, he was a lucky little bird. If that branch wasn't there, he'd be a statistic by now :(
His sibling did better - I heard the other bird calling his parents form somewhere inside the bush - he definitely made a longer flight.

Best Regards,

Martin

Hi Martin, very good shot of this young Robin. He should have waited a couple of more days to leave the nest. He looks very young. Your detail on this guy is excellent with very nice clarity on that mottled young plumage and that eye (you can probably see yourself in it in your copy). Colour is good. Nice shot.

Thanks, John

Hallo Martin
I do not have time to leave a proper critique; I do however want to tell you that you have captured this little Robin’s emotions and facial expressions excellently. I can understand why you have given it the title "A Youngster in trouble" as this little one surely needs some kind of encouragement looking at that miserable and sad face. Kind regards and thanks for sharing.

Hi Martin,
Great image, the bird is nice & sharp with excellent details, DOF, POV, color, exposure, and it's composed well.
Nice OOF BG effect also, I think it adds to the overall comp..

Bonjour Martin,

Bravo pour cette belle prise. J'aime bien l'arrière plan créé par l'eau et la composition générale.
Merci.
